Apple has started developing a 20-inch foldable display for a future MacBook Pro model, according to a new report. It is expected that the tech giant will release its first foldable device by 2027.
Apple to release its first device with a foldable display by 2027
According to a new report today from The Elec, Apple is working on a foldable product with a 20.25-inch OLED display. With the size of the display in mind, it is expected that the device could be a MacBook Pro.
Given that the screen size is in its early 20 inches when unfolded, the project product is likely to be in a form close to a MacBook (laptop). Assuming a 20-inch product is 20.25 inches, it will be 15.3 inches in size when folded. The currently available Apple MacBook Series screen sizes are mid-to-late 10 inches, and the iPad (tablet) series screen sizes are between less than 10 inches and early 10 inches.
The report goes on to claim that it will take time for this 20-inch foldable display device to materialize. This is because the tech giant will likely announce it only after expanding OLED displays to its iPads and Macs. As of right now, Apple only uses OLED displays for its higher-end iPhones and Apple Watches. Other products in its catalog feature LCD displays.
It was previously reported that the tech giant would release its first foldable product by 2025. However, since the plan to expand OLED displays to MacBooks has been pushed back from 2025 to 2026, it is likely that Apple will announce the 20-inch MacBook with a foldable display by 2027.
The Elec also suggests that Apple could decide to release a foldable iPad before it releases a 20-inch device with a foldable display. The report goes on to claim that Apple could replace the iPad mini with a foldable device. On the topic of iPads, Apple is planning to launch 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad models with OLED displays by 2024.
Lastly, the report says that the chances of Apple releasing a foldable iPhone are very low since there is no need to fold it to use it. There would be no advantages to an iPhone with a foldable display like there could be with an iPad or MacBook that can fold.
