The next-generation iPhone SE could arrive in the first half of 2022, according to a new report. The design language of the smartphone will remain similar to iPhone SE (2020). While there is no major redesign expected for iPhone SE, the model will receive major internal upgrades. As per the report, the next-gen iPhone SE will feature Apple’s A15 chip that will first be featured in its upcoming iPhone 13 lineup. The smartphone will also sport 5G connectivity.
5G-enabled iPhone SE slated for release in 2022
The next iPhone SE will have a similar design to the current model with a 4.7-inch LCD panel, unlike high-end iPhones which feature OLED panels. The report does not mention whether the model will feature a Home button or bezels but there is no evidence to support the contrary at this point in time. TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also previously said that the upcoming iPhone SE will sport the same design as the current model.
The budget 5G iPhone is set to hit the market as early as the first half of 2022, sources briefed on the matter said. It will be powered by Apple’s own A15 processor — the same chip that will go into this year’s premium iPhones — and its 5G connectivity will be enabled by Qualcomm’s X60 modem chip, they added.
Nikkei’s claims that the next iPhone SE will feature Apple’s A15 processor contradict a recent DigiTimes report that the tech giant will introduce the smartphone with an A14 Bionic chip.
The report also supports recent industry reports that next year’s flagship iPhone lineup will not include a 5.4-inch mini variant due to lackluster sales of iPhone 12 mini. In its place, the Cupertino tech giant will introduce a second 6.7-inch model to the lineup which will result in giving consumers the option to choose between two iPhone 14 models and two iPhone 14 Pro models.
“It is pretty much decided that there won’t be a Mini next year, and there will be a relatively cost-effective version of the largest iPhone Pro Max instead. However, the designs for the detailed specifications for the four new models next year are not yet locked in,” one of the people with direct knowledge of the matter told Nikkei Asia.
As per the report, mass production for iPhone 13 will commence next month with Apple set to produce an estimated 95 million units through the start of 2022.
