David Wadhwani, President of Digital Media Business at Adobe, says generative AI is the next evolution of AI-driven creativity and productivity. He adds that Adobe Firefly will transform the conversation between creator and computer into something more natural, intuitive, and powerful. This tool is in beta, and Adobe says it will develop over time. Firefly can only be used online right now, but it will eventually become a part of Adobe’s apps such as Photoshop and InDesign.
Adobe is stressing that the Firefly tool is currently in beta, and its capabilities will develop over time. “We plan to build [these features] into Firefly,” the company says, “plus the ability to edit what you create using the tools you already know and love.”
Currently, Adobe Firefly has been trained on very specific previous examples of artwork. The system has been learning from public domain images, or ones licensed as part of Adobe Stock. Adobe says that this means the AI-generated artwork will be unique, and artists will not be ripped off. Adobe’s Vice President of Generative AI and Sensei at Adobe, Alexandru Costin, has confirmed that payment is coming for artists whose work is used by the AI’s machine learning algorithms.
“We’re exploring multiple options,” said Costin, “and the plan is to have payment systems in place before Firefly comes out of beta.” Costin also stated that the model used by Firefly has never seen any brand content or trademark, so the generated content will be unique and of high quality.
