AirPods 4 – USB-C charging, Active Noise Cancellation, and custom fit innovations

Apple’s September event was not only a showcase for the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and Apple Watch Series 10 but also a significant moment for AirPods enthusiasts. The tech giant introduced the fourth generation of its AirPods lineup, marking a notable evolution with two distinct models: the standard AirPods 4 and the advanced AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).

During the event, Apple also announced new hearing features for AirPods Pro 2 as well as fresh color options for AirPods Max.

“With AirPods 4, customers can enjoy Active Noise Cancellation and the most advanced audio experience ever in an open-ear design,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

New Features and design

The AirPods 4 series represents Apple’s most substantial update to its earbuds yet. Both versions feature the new H2 chip, which enhances sound quality with richer bass and clearer highs. This chip also enables advanced features like Personalized Spatial Audio and Voice Isolation, offering an immersive and tailored listening experience. Users can control audio playback through head gestures, such as nodding to accept calls or shaking to decline them—a futuristic touch that simplifies interactions with Siri.

Design improvements are evident with the new AirPods 4. Apple has refined the contours of the earbuds for a better fit, leveraging extensive data to ensure comfort for a wider range of ear shapes. The shorter stem design not only looks more streamlined but also reduces visibility when worn. The AirPods 4 are available in two models: the standard version and the higher-end AirPods 4 with ANC. The latter includes additional features such as active noise cancellation, Transparency Mode, and Adaptive Audio, providing a more versatile audio experience.

Charging and battery life

Both models come with a redesigned charging case that now supports USB-C, aligning with Apple’s move towards universal charging solutions. The case is notably smaller and lighter, yet it offers up to 30 hours of battery life combined with the earbuds. The AirPods 4 with ANC also features wireless charging and includes a built-in speaker to assist with Apple’s Find My functionality.

Pricing and availability

The AirPods 4 are priced competitively at $129 for the standard model and $179 for the version with ANC. Pre-orders began immediately following the event, with both models scheduled to be available in stores starting September 20.
