At today’s ‘It’s Glowtime’ event, Apple revealed an updated version of its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max alongside AirPods 4, and new hearing health features for AirPods Pro 2. Instead of introducing a new AirPods Max 2, the tech giant has opted to refresh the existing model with some notable tweaks, primarily focusing on aesthetics and connectivity.
USB-C
The standout feature of the revamped AirPods Max is the addition of a USB-C port. This update aligns with Apple’s broader shift towards USB-C across its product lineup, reflecting the company’s commitment to standardizing charging solutions and complying with recent regulatory changes in the EU. The move from the proprietary Lightning port to USB-C is a significant step, offering users a more universal charging option and enhancing compatibility with other devices.
5 new colors
In addition to the new port, Apple has introduced five fresh color options for the AirPods Max: Midnight, Blue, Purple, Orange, and Starlight. These vibrant hues provide a refreshed look, allowing users to personalize their headphones further. Despite these cosmetic changes, the fundamental design and build quality of the AirPods Max remain unchanged. The headphones still feature a breathable knit mesh canopy, stainless steel frame, and anodized aluminum ear cups, ensuring durability and comfort.
iOS 18 integration
The updated AirPods Max will support Personalized Spatial Audio through the upcoming iOS 18 update. This feature aims to enhance the listening experience by providing tailored sound profiles for music, movies, and games. However, it’s important to note that the internal components of the AirPods Max, including the chip, appear to remain the same as in the original model. As a result, features exclusive to the latest AirPods Pro, such as advanced noise cancellation and Adaptive Audio, are not included in this refresh.
Pricing and availability
The updated AirPods Max are priced at $549, maintaining the same price point as the original model. Pre-orders for the new AirPods Max begin today, with the official release scheduled for September 20, 2024. Despite the incremental updates, the AirPods Max continues to offer a luxurious listening experience with solid noise cancellation and a high-quality build.
