AirTag item tracker has a unique distinction of being an Apple product at ships with a removable battery. Not only is it removable, but it is also an off-the-shelf CR2032 battery that is commonly used in other products around the world.
AirTag battery: user-replaceable CR2032
Due to its small size, a CR2032 battery is commonly used in watches and other small electronic products. AirTag is powered by this battery and can last more than a year. When the battery is running out, the paired iPhone notifies the user to replace it, which is as easy as taking off the top casing and popping in a fresh new battery. CR2032 coin cell battery is easily available online and in almost any electronic store. If you have a watch store nearby, you can easily get one there.
Apple’s claim of 1-year battery life is based on testing with ultrawide band equipped iPhone models, four sound alerts per day, and one Precision Finding instance. If you lose your items more than once per day and need to use Precision Finding often, your AirTag battery might not last as long.
Testing conducted by Apple in March 2021 using preproduction AirTag units and software paired with iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max units running preproduction software. Battery life based on an everyday use of four play sound events and one Precision Finding event per day. Battery life varies with usage, environmental conditions, replacement battery manufacturer, and many other factors; actual results will vary.
Despite featuring a user-replaceable battery, AirTag is still water-resistant with a rating of IP67. This means that it is water, splash and dustproof, and can also survive underwater at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes. This does not mean that you should tag objects underwater with it, but it shows that it can outlast tough conditions.
AirTag is available for purchase now from Apple and other online and retail stores.
