Deadline reports that popular actor of Star Trek and Game of Thrones, Alexander Siddig will star in Apple TV+ new drama series ‘Shantaram’. The new series is based on Gregory David Robert’s bestselling novel and will be produced by Paramount Television Studio and Anonymous Content.
Apple TV+ has been on a shopping spree since the start of 2021. Recently, the video streaming service acquired first-look rights of new television projects by MountainA studios owned by Natalie Portman and Sophie Mas, first-look rights of movies by Imagine Entertainment studios, ordered ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever‘ starring Russel Crowe and Zac Efron, ‘Lady in the Lake‘ starring Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’O and much more.
New drama series ‘Shantaram’ coming on Apple TV+ starring Alexander Siddig and Charlie Hunnam
The new drama series will have 12 episodes telling the story of a prisoner on Lin, played by Charlie Hunnam, from an Australian prison and finding refugee in India. There he meets Bombay’s kingpin Khader Khan, played by Alexander. Deadline writes,
Shantaram is written and executive produced by Steven Lightfoot, who also serves as showrunner. Richard Sharkey, Bharat Nalluri, who is set to direct six episodes, Steve Golin, Nicole Clemens, Andrea Barron, Justin Kurzel and Eric Singer also executive produce.
The Shantaram novel is described as an exploration of love, forgiveness and courage on the long road to redemption. It has been published in 39 languages in 42 territories worldwide and sold more than 6 million copies to date.
The new series will bring more variety of regional content which Apple TV+ is lacking at the moment. A day ago, the video streaming service announced the premiere of season 2 of popular British comedy ‘Trying’ on May 14 and also the renewal of the title for season 3.
Apple TV+ is available across Apple devices via the Apple TV app for $4.99 per month. It is also compatible with select TV sets from Samsung, LG, Amazon and Playstation, and Xbox consoles.
