Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ and Nexus S announced by Google

Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread is fresh out of the oven as Google have made some handy tweaks and should get you Android fans salivating at the mouth while looking through the window.

Firstly the update is being called out as significantly better for game development which ties in nicely with all the PlayStation Phone rumors flying around. A lot of new stuff is baked in such as :

  • VoIP support
  • Video Calling Support via a front camera
  • Better Cut-and-Paste
  • NFC integration
  • Gyroscope Support for more accurate location data
  • New download manager
  • A redesigned keyboard with multitouch support
  • Integrated task manager

Google have also announced their new Nexus S phone which will be their flagship device for this Android 2.3 release.nexus-s-main-rm-eng

Lets not waste time and hit the specs:

  • Packed with a 4-inch WVGA display
  • Triband HSPA with AWS support
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • NFC
  • 16GB on board storage
  • 512MB of Ram
  • Gyroscope(Also on Galaxy S phones)
  • 1GHz Cortex A8-based Hummingbird processor
  • And most of all Android 2.3

This baby is scheduled to be released on the 16th of December in the US and then 4 days later on the 20th in the UK. It will cost $199 on a two year deal with T-Mobile or $529 unlocked.
