Cell phone brand loyalty survey 2021 by SellCell reveals that Apple’s brand loyalty is at an all-time high with 92% with a 1.4% increase this year and Samsung’s loyalty has declined to 74% with an 11% drop. As per the report, users’ privacy, Apple’s ecosystem, and the new iPhone 12 line-up were the major contributing factors for users to switch or upgrade to an iPhone.
The iPhone vs. Android survey interviewed five thousand, over 18 years, participants in the United States with any of the five leading smartphone brands: Apple, Samsung, Google, LG, and Motorola. And the study focused on four measures: brand loyalty of five major smartphone brands, preferred brand of choice for switchers, factors affecting brand loyalty and brand switching, and most popular and least popular flagship smartphones. Here are the survey results.
Apple’s brand loyalty
91.9% of iPhone users said they intend on staying with their current brand. Only 8.1% of iPhone users said they will switch to a different brand. The 91.9% of loyal iPhone users gave the following reasons for staying with the brand:
- 45% said it’s the best brand
- 21% said they were tied to the ecosystem
- 16% said they never experienced an issue with the brand
- 10% said that switching from iOS to Android is a hassle
- 8% said that they like to stick with what they know
The 8.1% defectors gave the following reasons for switching to another brand:
- 38% said the other brand offer better technology like camera, display, and others
- 26.4% said they prefer other brand’s design
- 12.9% said they like the latest model
- 9.2% said they prefer other brand’s operating system
- 6.7% said other brand offers better value for money
- 3.7% said they just want a change
- 3.1% said they like the privacy protection of the other brand
Samsung’s brand loyalty
On the other hand, 74% of Samsung users said they will stay with the brand and 26% wanted to switch. The brand loyalists gave the following reasons for staying with the brand:
- 41% said it’s the best brand
- 23% said they never experienced an issue with the brand
- 18% said that switching from Android to iOS is a hassle
- 13% said that they like to stick with what they know
- 5% said they were tied to the ecosystem
The 26% of defectors gave the following reasons for switching to another brand:
- 31.5% said they like the privacy protection of the other brand
- 25.2% said other brand offers better value for money
- 13.9% said they just want a change
- 13% said they prefer other brand’s operating system
- 7.8% said they prefer other brand’s design
- 5% said the other brand offer better technology like camera, display, and others
- 3.6% said they like the latest model
Brand loyalty of other smartphones
Google users:
- 65.2% users wanted to stay with the brand
- 34.8% users wanted to switch
LG users:
- 37.4% users wanted to stay with the brand
- 62.6% users wanted to switch
Motorola users
- 71% users wanted to stay with the brand
- 29% users wanted to switch

With the introduction of radical new privacy features, Apple has certainly managed to increase public awareness around tracking and about the importance of protecting one’s digital privacy.
The drop in customer loyalty among Samsung and Google users could be a testament to growing privacy consciousness among consumers.
‘Better privacy protection’ (31.5%) is the main reason why Samsung users would want to switch to a different brand, according to the survey.
