Apple considered launching cloud gaming along with Apple Arcade in 2019 – Report

In the Q&A session of his latest newsletter, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said that the Cupertino tech giant considered launching a cloud gaming service along with Apple Arcade. Launched in 2019, Apple Arcade offers games from a $4.99 monthly subscription fee, without ads and in-app purchases. Subscribers can download games from App Store, via the Apple Arcade section, across Apple devices to enjoy anywhere and at any time.

Although more companies are offering cloud gaming services like Facebook, Netflix, Microsoft, the Cupertino tech giant does not allow cloud gaming on its devices via App Store. Apple argues that cloud gaming services offer games connected to servers that are not approved by its App Store reviewers. And this same reason is reiterated by Gurman.

Apple Arcade might be the only gaming service on Apple’s devices

When Gurman was asked, “Is Apple planning a cloud-based gaming service based on Apple Arcade?” he wrote:

“Microsoft Corp., Nvidia Corp., Google and others have launched gaming services that run from the cloud. That allows support for a wider range of games and creates a “Netflix for games”-like experience. Oddly, Apple doesn’t allow those rivals to join Apple Arcade on the App Store. The company says that’s not because they’re competitors, but simply because it doesn’t allow all-you-can-eat cloud gaming services on its devices.

Despite that, the company in the past has internally discussed the prospects of launching such a service, I’m told.”

For this reason, Microsoft and Facebook launched their cloud-gaming services without an iOS app, recently. However, users can still enjoy xCloud gaming via web browsers on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

A new report claims that the Cupertino tech giant is working on a gaming console to compete with Nintendo Switch.
