Apple to discontinue Music Memos app in favor of Voice Memos

Apple has announced that it is going to drop the Music Memos app soon. The company has released an update to allow users to export their recordings to the Voice Memos app. This is the first update to the app in over a year and the intent is to discontinue the app once and for all.

Apple released its Music Memos app in 2016, customizing it for songwriters to easily and quickly record audio and develop song ideas. However, since 2016 the app has gone through long durations with no updates or even acknowledgments of its existence by Apple.

Music Memos app will be discontinued by Apple

Back in 2016, Apple released Music Memos for iPhone and iPad. The idea was to grow on the already established Voice Memos apps’ ease of use while adding some features for musicians. A person could record something with a piano or acoustic guitar in uncompressed audio, and Music Memos would identify the chords played and could also add in bass backing and drum tracks that kept the rhythm going.

In the first update to Music Memos in over a year, the change long details new integration with Voice Memos. Apple says in a document:

The Music Memos app won’t be updated after Music Memos version 1.0.7, and you won’t be able to download it after March 1, 2021. If you have an iPhone with iOS 14 or an iPad with iPadOS 14, you can continue to use Music Memos. And if you’ve previously downloaded the app, you can still access it from your App Store purchase history. But you should export your Music Memos recordings to your Voice Memos library to make sure you keep all of your recordings.

There will now be a Recording is moving to Voice Memos message when you open Music Memos. By tapping Export, the app will transfer all your data to Voice Memos in a folder labeled Music Memos. You can just delay the export for another week by dismissing the message and pressing OK. If you wish to create new recordings to Music Memos before exporting, make sure to copy those as well.

According to Apple, the app will be unavailable to download after March 1st, 2021 for new users. If you already have the app installed, it will remain in your App Store library. Keep in mind that it will not get any further updates after this one.
