Apple Intelligence delayed to 18.1, no AI for iPhone 16 launch

Apple’s highly anticipated suite of AI features, known as Apple Intelligence, will not debut with the initial release of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has decided to postpone the launch of Apple Intelligence to ensure the stability and performance of its new operating systems.

The tech giant now plans to roll out Apple Intelligence with a subsequent update, iOS 18.1, which is expected to be released in October.

Apple Intelligence

By deferring the introduction of its AI capabilities, Apple aims to address any potential bugs and refine the overall functionality of its software. As a result, the upcoming iPhone 16 models will launch without the anticipated AI features, which will be made available through a software update after the initial release of iOS 18.

Despite the delay, Apple will provide developers with early access to Apple Intelligence through the iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 beta versions. This move will allow developers to begin integrating these AI-powered features into their applications before the public release. The beta versions are expected to be available as early as next week, which is unusual given that Apple typically waits until the initial version of its software is released before offering previews of subsequent updates.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is set to bring a host of new features, including intelligent notification management, enhanced writing tools, and an improved Siri assistant. The suite is also expected to integrate with ChatGPT, providing users with advanced generative AI capabilities. However, some of these features, such as the revamped version of Siri and integration with additional AI models like Google’s Gemini and Meta’s Llama, may not be available until early 2025.

The delay means that while iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will launch as scheduled in September, the iPhone 16 and other compatible devices will not initially benefit from the Apple Intelligence features. Instead, users will need to wait for the iOS 18.1 update to access these new capabilities.
