The Cupertino tech giant is expected to launch the next-generation iPhone 13 series later this year. The new iPhone series is reported to have advanced camera lenses and 3D sensors which increases the requirement for voice coil motor (VCM) components. Therefore, Apple’s Taiwan-based VCM manufacturers expect large orders from Apple to increase starting this month, as per DigiTimes.
Apple VCM orders for iPhone 13 likely to get strong from June 2021
Previously, DigiTimes reported that all four models of the iPhone 13 series are speculated to have sensor-shift camera stabilization, therefore the company’s VCM suppliers Alps and Mitsumi shipments for iPhones will surpass those of Android handsets by late July.
VCM suppliers expect order pull-ins from Apple to gradually turn strong starting from June as the US brand is expected to release its next-generation iPhones later this year.
The sources pointed out that the next-generation iPhones are expected to have upgrades in camera modules and 3D sensors for Face ID, resulting in increasing use of VCMs, said the sources adding that Apple has also asked related component suppliers to increase their capacities by 30-40% in order to meet its demand.
In addition, the supply chain publisher states that Apple’s demand for VCM will be higher than other smartphone makers.
Since Huawei’s demand for high-end CIS and optical lens was significantly reduced in the wake of the US sanctions, the Chinese vendor’s orders for related components have significantly dropped. Demand from Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo is significant for the components, but the volumes that each of them need are still weaker than those of Apple.
The camera system in the entire iPhone 13 is speculated to be equipped with LiDAR sensors. Currently, only iPhone 12 Pro models have the LiDAR scanner to offer AR and enhanced photography experience. In addition, the next-generation iPhone series will be powered by A15 chip and bigger batteries than iPhone 12. It will come with a smaller notch, a 120Hz ProMotion display, and more.
