Apple today confirmed that its second-generation iPhone SE is now being assembled in India for orders placed within the country. Recently, the company’s major suppliers Wistron and Foxconn bought assembling units in India as relations between the United States and China become strenuous.
In a statement shared by The Times of India, spokesperson for Apple said “iPhone SE packs our most powerful chip into our most popular size at our most affordable price and we’re excited to be making it in India for our local customers.”
Apple confirms manufacturing in India
The new iPhone SE is being assembled by Wistron at its plant in Bengaluru, according to the report. Wistron also assembles iPhone 7 models in India, and in the past, it has assembled the original iPhone SE and the iPhone 6s in India. Last week, it was reported that Wistron could start assembling iPhone 12 models in India next year as well.
Apple partner Foxconn also has an assembly unit in India, where it now assembles iPhone 11 and iPhone XR models, though it is not involved with iPhone SE production. Foxconn, which reportedly plans to invest up to $1 billion to expand its Indian operations.
Wistron and Foxconn are among a growing number of Apple suppliers that have shifted more production to countries like India and Vietnam amid the U.S.-China trade war. The need to explore other manufacturing centers in other countries for Apple is more immediate after United States President Donald Trump imposed harsher trade tariffs on China.
2020 iPhone SE – Details
The newest iPhone SE was launched on April 15 and comes at a starting price of Rs 42,990 in India, making it the cheapest iPhone customers can purchase in the country. The iPhone is powered by an A13 Bionic Chip. With a 4.7-inch Retina HD display, the 2020 iPhone SE has a Touch ID home button at the bottom of the screen.
The device has a glass front and back with an aluminum frame and a single-lens rear camera. It is rated for IP67 water resistance up to 1-meter depth for 30 minutes. It is available in black, white, and (Product) RED color options and there are 64, 128, and 256 GB variants of the iPhone SE. All the models come with haptic touch, Apple Pay support, wireless charging, Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit-class LTE, and Dual-SIM support.
