Apple to launch iMac Pro in spring 2022 and foldable iPhone in 2023 – Report

Predicting the new display technologies expected in 2022 from leading brands, display analyst Ross Young claims that Apple will launch the new 27-inch iMac Pro in spring of 2022, but will delay the launch of its first foldable iPhone by 2023 – 2024.

The current chip shortage has created drastic supply and demand gaps for the tech industry which has also impacted Apple, a company that orders its components in advance. Although facing billions of dollars worth of loss in sales due to supply constraints, Apple is still going to launch new products in the market and the product lineup for 2022 includes redesigned iPad Pro with MagSafe wireless charging support, M2 MacBook Air, high-end iMac with Apple Silicon, MacBook Pro, and others. According to Young, iMac will be upgraded with an advanced display tech.

Apple will introduce ProMotion in 27-inch iMac in 2022 but is likely to launch foldable iPhone with OLED display by 2024

For the first time, Apple introduced 120Hz ProMotion tech in iPhone 13 Pro and 2021 MacBook Pro models to offer dynamic switching between faster refresh rates up to 120Hz and slower refresh rates to 24Hz or 10Hz that allows apps to run more smoothly, presents seamless animations, and offer better power efficiency.

Now, Young claims that the same display tech will be featured in the upcoming 27-inch iMac Pro expected to be powered by M1 Max duo configuration with 20-core CPU, 64-cores GPU, and up to 128 GB of RAM. He also added that the company the foldable iPhone with OLED display will not launch before 2023.

  • Launch of the 27” iMac Pro with MiniLEDs,120Hz Variable Refresh, and Oxide Backplanes. Expected in the spring as Apple brings its ProMotion technology to the iMac.
  • Foldable (iPhone) and OLED iPad and MacBook Timing: Not expected until 2023 at the earliest, 2024 more likely.

Young’s claim corroborates Ming-Chi Kuo’s report that stated the alleged foldable iPhone will launch in 2024. Previously, he detailed that the foldable iPhone would feature an 8-inch screen with two QHD+ flexible OLED displays connected with a hinge in the middle. And with control of hardware and software, Kuo expects the Cupertino tech giant to lead the foldable smartphones market.

At present, the product position of foldable smartphones is mainly to integrate the smartphone and tablet. But we believe that the foldable smartphone is only one of the applications of the foldable design. We predict that foldable devices will blur the product segmentations between smartphones, tablets, and laptops in the future. With its cross-product ecosystems and hardware design advantages, Apple will be the biggest winner in the new foldable device trend.
