Apple has officially announced the upcoming “Wonderlust” event will be held on September 12. Rumor mills are almost certain that the tech giant will launch the new USB-C iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro at the event, along with the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg predicts that Apple will also launch new USB-C AirPods at the “Wonderlust” event.
In addition to the USB-C iPhone 15 series, Apple expected to unveil USB-C AirPods
Currently, Apple retails AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods Max, and the entire lineup supports charging via Lightning connector.
If the iPhone is finally transitioning to the USB-C port, it is likely that AirPods are too. However, Gurman did not mention which AirPods model will be getting a USB-C port.
“To match the new iPhones, Apple will introduce updated AirPods at the event that include a USB-C charging port.”
Out of all the models, AirPods Pro 2 is the newest. They launched on September 23, 2022, with an advanced H2 chip, Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, improved noise cancellation, Transparency mode and sound quality, and longer battery life. The in-ear headphones have a new MagSafe charging case with a lanyard.
- AirPods 3 launched on October 26, 2021.
- The only over-the-ear headphones in the lineup, AirPods Max (first-generation) were launched on December 15, 2020.
- AirPods 2 launched on March 20, 2019.
As AirPods Max have not been upgraded for almost three years, it is likely that Apple might introduce USB-C AirPods Max at the event.
However, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple would update audio products in the second half of 2024 and launch the new HomePod mini 2, AirPods Max (second-generation), and a cheaper AirPods model.
The first generation HomePod mini debuted in November 2020, nearly three years ago like the AirPods Max.
Maybe the tech giant managed to develop new USB-C AirPods without giving leakers any wind of it. We will only have to wait a few more days to know for sure.
