Apple expands mobile student IDs in Wallet app to Canada and more colleges in the U.S.

Apple has announced the expansion of digital IDs on iPhone and Apple Watch via the Wallet app to Canada and more universities in the United States. In this coming school year, thousands of students and faculty members will be able to gain access to their campus buildings and make online purchases with a simple tap on their iPhone or Apple Watch.

Apple allows users to declutter their physical wallets by replacing their physical cards with digital ones in the Wallet app. Users can keep credit/ debit cards, transit cards, student ID, Car keys, airline boarding passes, event tickets, and more in one app on their iPhone and Apple Watch. It enables them to keep important cards safe, and easily accessible for a range of activities like authentication, online payments, and others.

This year, more students in Canada and U.S. will be able to add ID cards to their Wallet app

In collaboration with industry leaders for campus credentials and mobile access, including Transact, CBORD, TouchNet, Atrium, HID Global, and Allegion, Apple is enabled to offer student IDs on Wallet. And this school year, students of the University of New Brunswick and Sheridan College in Canada will be able to enjoy the feature.

The new colleges to adopt mobile student IDs in the United States include Auburn University, Northern Arizona University, University of Maine, New Mexico State University, and many more across the country.

Introduced in April 2021, Apple says that students used mobile student IDs in the Wallet app more than physical cards to access campus buildings and online purchases. Starting this Fall, the University of Alabama will exclusively issue 38,000 mobile student IDs to students with eligible devices. Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay said:

“We’re excited to work with more schools in the US and introduce mobile student IDs in Canada to provide a secure and convenient way to get around campus with iPhone and Apple Watch. Students and faculty have embraced using their iPhone and Apple Watch as the best way to access buildings, purchase meals, and more.”

The Wallet app is available on the App Store for free. It is compatible with iPhone and Apple Watch. With iOS 15 coming this Fall, users will also be able to add their IDs like driver’s licenses and digital keys for home, work, hotel, and other places in the app.
