Apple Music signs deal with TME to offer music from Chinese labels and creators

Tencent Music Entertainment Group (TME) has announced a deal with Apple Music to bring TME’s premium music content from Chinese labels and creators to the Apple Music subscribers around the world. The new library of songs includes China’s unique music culture and genres to a global audience which will enhance the discovery of “Chinese music and assist in the international development of Chinese musicians.”

TME is a leading online music and audio entertainment service in China which owns music apps like QQ Music, Kugou Music, Kuwo Music, and WeSing in the country. As part of its commitment to allow users to create music, TME empowers music with technology so that everyone can create, share and enjoy music.

Apple Music has a growing library of more than 90 million songs from artists around the world. And with this new deal, the music streaming service has added thousands of tracks to its catalog. TME is hopeful that the partnership will be mutually beneficial and more importantly it will provide global exposure to Chinese established and emerging artists. 

TME has long drawn on its advanced technology and extensive industry resources, creating a large volume of high-quality new music in collaboration with industry partners. TME also attracts hundreds of thousands of Chinese musicians hoping to achieve their musical dreams through the Tencent Musician Platform. The availability of TME’s catalog on Apple Music will help promote more high-quality Chinese music overseas and realize the global value of Chinese music.

TME also announced that it will foresee the distribution, settlement of royalties, and other elements related to the business of music labels and creators associated with its platform. 

As a new global music distribution platform launched by TME, TME Music Cloud will also adopt content self-management, online distribution and promotion, settlement of royalties, and music data insights, providing global level omni-channel distribution for a wide range of partner labels and creators. At the same time, TME’s industry resources and Tencent’s social ecology will offer comprehensive assistance to content creators in content production and promotion as well as commercial realization.

Recently, Apple Music was launched on PlayStation 5 and the service added more than 250 mood and activity playlists. A new Apple Music Voice Plan is also scheduled to launch this fall for subscribers to request Siri to play music for a lower $4.99 monthly fee.
