Is Apple’s next-gen CarPlay still coming in 2025? What you need to know

Apple’s next-generation CarPlay, first teased in 2022, promised to revolutionize the in-car experience by offering a more integrated interface that would span multiple screens in vehicles, including the dashboard and instrument clusters. The system was designed to provide a seamless blend of iPhone functionality with key vehicle controls, allowing drivers to access features like climate control, navigation, and media directly through the CarPlay interface. Apple’s vision included customizable dashboards that could adapt to each automaker’s unique branding while maintaining a cohesive and intuitive design.

However, as of early 2025, the system has yet to materialize in consumer vehicles, despite Apple’s earlier promises. The initial launch was expected in 2024, but the rollout has faced significant delays. While companies like Porsche and Aston Martin showcased concept designs featuring the new CarPlay in late 2023, there has been no official confirmation of release dates or any vehicles hitting the market with the new system.

The delay is largely attributed to the challenges of integrating CarPlay with core vehicle systems. Developing a cohesive interface that controls vehicle functions such as speedometers, fuel gauges, and climate control requires extensive collaboration between Apple and automakers. The automotive industry’s longer development cycles, compared to those in consumer electronics, have made it difficult to meet the original timeline.

Additionally, some automakers are hesitant to cede control of in-car interfaces to tech companies. Brands like General Motors have signaled their intention to move away from both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in favor of proprietary systems that give them greater control over customer data and brand identity. Moreover, Google’s Android Automotive system has been gaining traction as a native alternative to CarPlay, further complicating the situation for Apple.

Despite these setbacks, Apple continues to invest in automotive technologies and maintains a strong interest in pushing the next-gen CarPlay forward. Regulatory filings and patent drawings filed in 2024 indicate ongoing development efforts, and the company is likely to provide updates on its progress at future events, possibly aligning with new vehicle launches from partner automakers.

In the meantime, Apple has introduced incremental updates to the existing CarPlay, including support for new spatial audio formats, improved accessibility features, and integration with third-party apps.
