Apple is reportedly in talks to invest in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, as part of a new funding round that could value the company at over $100 billion. This potential investment highlights Apple’s commitment to enhancing its position in the AI market, particularly as it prepares to integrate ChatGPT into its upcoming iOS 18 release.
As part of the Apple Intelligence initiative, which is set to roll out later this year, Apple users will be able to connect Siri to ChatGPT, allowing the AI to handle queries and generate responses directly within Apple’s ecosystem. This integration will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, offering users the ability to utilize ChatGPT for tasks such as answering complex questions or generating text and images through Apple’s system-wide Writing Tools feature. Apple has emphasized that this integration will maintain user privacy by obscuring IP addresses and ensuring that OpenAI does not store ChatGPT requests made from its devices.
The investment talks, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, indicate that Apple may be looking to strengthen its relationship with OpenAI, possibly mirroring the deep integration that Microsoft has established with its own products. Microsoft has been a major investor in OpenAI since 2019, holding a 49% share of its profits after investing $13 billion. Appleās involvement in the latest funding round, which is led by Thrive Capital and is expected to raise several billion dollars, would be an unusual move for the company, as it typically focuses its investments on manufacturing partners rather than startups.
Apple seems to be doubling down on AI by partnering closely with OpenAI. This strategic move could give Siri a major upgrade, turning it into a more capable and versatile assistant. But Apple isn’t stopping there. It’s also looking into collaborations with other AI powerhouses like Google and Anthropic. This suggests that Apple is determined to stay ahead of the curve in the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence.
