The new iPhone 14 series is expected to launch in September this year. Display analyst Ross Young says that iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a “pill + hole” notch design and the same notch design will be available across all iPhone 15 series smartphones in 2023.
After introducing advanced features like image stabilization sensors, larger battery, in iPhone 12 Pro models, Apple made the feature available across iPhone 13 series and added a 120Hz ProMotion display and an improved camera system in iPhone 13 Pro models. Now, it is speculated that the entire iPhone 14 series will feature a 120Hz ProMotion display while the iPhone 14 Pro models will come with a new notch design.
Apple will not feature a “punch hole” display in iPhone 14 Pro models and 2023 iPhone series
Prior to rumors of the “pill + hole” notch design in iPhone 14 Pro models, it was speculated that Apple will feature the “punch hole” display in the high-end models. Punch hole display tech removes the notch completely by placing the Face ID authentication components under the screen and only leaves a hole for the selfie camera on the display. The tech provides more screen real estate and resolves the irk with the notch for some.
Other OEMs already offer punch-hole displays in their latest smartphones like Samsung and Oppo but with limitations and lack of performance. Thus, Apple is working on perfecting the technology. Young says that the punch-hole display will not debut in 2022 and 2023 iPhone models.
However, we have heard from a few sources that under panel Face ID won’t likely meet the timing for 2023 mass production. Part of this could potentially be related to coordination between the display and sensor teams. Of course, at least two of their suppliers would also have to be qualified to produce it in mass production. Companies we talked to did not expect it to launch in 2023.
