Apple’s foray into the smart home market is gaining momentum with plans to release a dedicated smart home hub in 2025. According to reports from reputable sources, including Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo, this device represents Apple’s most significant step toward a larger role in the smart home ecosystem. Positioned as a hybrid between an iPad and a HomePod, the device aims to enhance Apple’s HomeKit capabilities while introducing advanced features designed to rival Google’s Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Show.
The rumored device, often referred to as Apple’s “Home Hub,” is expected to feature a 7-inch display powered by the A18 chip. It will run on a new “homeOS” operating system, which is believed to prioritize widget-based controls, automation, and seamless integration with Apple’s ecosystem. The inclusion of Apple Intelligence will further refine Siri’s capabilities, enabling more conversational commands and sophisticated automation.
Reports suggest the device will support both wall-mounted and tabletop configurations, with a built-in speaker base for superior audio quality. Additionally, the inclusion of a camera and microphone will enable FaceTime video calls and potentially serve as a home security camera. Apple is also expected to roll out complementary smart home accessories, such as indoor security cameras and a doorbell with Face ID capabilities, reinforcing its push into the home automation space.
The adoption of the Matter and Thread standards is another key aspect of this device, ensuring compatibility with third-party smart home devices.
Gurman described the Home Hub as a “smaller and cheaper iPad” tailored for smart home management. It is expected to unify control over appliances, provide access to camera footage, and integrate seamlessly with Siri across Apple devices, including iPhones and HomePods. Kuo added that the device could leverage its built-in camera for additional security features and potentially include iCloud storage options for video footage.
While details about branding remain uncertain, earlier rumors indicated that the hub might use the HomePod name or debut as the Apple HomeHub. Regardless of its eventual name, the device is poised to elevate Apple’s presence in a market dominated by Amazon and Google. Its integration of AI, homeOS, and Matter standards positions it as a compelling option for users invested in the Apple ecosystem.
In addition to the Home Hub, Apple is rumored to be working on a refreshed lineup of HomePod minis, which could debut alongside the new hub in late 2025. The new minis are likely to include enhanced Siri functionality and tighter integration with the broader Apple ecosystem.
