Apple working on new Studio Display and potential Pro Display XDR update

Apple is reportedly developing two new Studio Display models as part of its external monitor refresh, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple Studio Display

The first model, codenamed J427, is expected to be a direct successor to the current Studio Display, with an anticipated launch either at the end of this year or early next year. This update could introduce mini-LED backlighting, a significant improvement over the existing LCD-based panel, offering better contrast and brightness.

While J427 is positioned as a clear successor, the second model, codenamed J527, remains somewhat of a mystery. Gurman speculates that Apple could be testing two versions of a next-generation Studio Display and may ultimately choose one to release. Another possibility is that J527 represents an entirely different product, such as a replacement for the aging Pro Display XDR. The Pro Display XDR, Apple’s high-end 32-inch, 6K monitor, has not received an update since its launch in 2019, making it a strong candidate for a refresh.

Apple Studio Display

Apple’s external monitor lineup has not seen significant updates in years, and with the rapid evolution of display technology, these rumored models could finally bring much-needed advancements. The Studio Display, first introduced in 2022, has been well-received for its design and integration with macOS, but its technology now lags behind competitors. The potential inclusion of mini-LED in J427 would align Apple’s monitor offerings with its latest MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models, both of which have embraced the technology for superior HDR performance.

J527’s identity remains speculative, but if it does turn out to be a new Pro Display XDR, it could feature improvements such as a higher refresh rate, better color accuracy, and possibly an even larger size option. Given that Apple has been pushing towards more professional-grade hardware, a Pro Display XDR refresh would make sense, especially for creatives and professionals relying on high-fidelity visuals.
