Apple TV+ has announced that its new docu-series “The Long Game: Bigger Than Basketball” about the life and career of basketball star Makur Maker will debut on Friday, April 22, worldwide. The upcoming five-part documentary series is a chronicle of the young basketball phenom Maker, on the court and outside.
The new docu-series is directed by Seth Gordon and executive produced by Gordon, Sony Pictures Television, Nikki Calabrese, Dane Lillegard, Andrew Fried, Julia Gunn, Luis Lopez, Jordan Wynn, Sarina Roma. “The Long Game: Bigger Than Basketball” is produced by Exhibit A and Boardwalk Pictures for Apple TV+.

Ranked as the highest-ranked high school player of the modern basketball recruiting time, “The Long Game: Bigger Than Basketball” documentary will unearth the coming-of-age story Maker; the challenges he faced professionally and personally as a student-athlete who had aspired to join NBA but chose a historically Black university (HBCU), Howard Univerity.
Seth Gordon (“Undefeated,” “The King of Kong,” “For All Mankind”) directs and executive produces “The Long Game: Bigger Than Basketball,” which follows Maker, the NBA hopeful who grabbed global headlines with his groundbreaking decision to forgo the NBA and play for Howard University, making him the highest-ranked high school player in the modern recruiting era to commit to a historically Black university (HBCU).
The tech giant itself plays an important part in the educational reformation of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Apple’s Community Education Initiative is introduced in over 24 HBCU to teach coding skills, invoke creativity, and offer workforce development opportunities for learners in particular from black and brown communities.
Furthermore, the docu-series will showcase the influence of his migration from a war-torn South Sudan to the United States as a child on taking a stand for the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States.
The docuseries is an intimate look at Makur’s life as a student-athlete with a dream of making it to the NBA, while unexpected physical challenges and a global pandemic threaten his college career. Off the courts, “The Long Game: Bigger Than Basketball” explores how his journey from fleeing war-torn South Sudan as a child and his tight-knit support system led him to go to an HBCU, and in turn, allowed him to make an impactful statement in the wake of America’s cultural response to the Black Lives Matter movement.
