Mariah Carey’s Christmas Special will not be aired on Apple’s streaming service, Apple TV+, this year. Instead, the special will be shown on CBS and Paramount+.

‘Queen of Christmas’ Mariah Carey no longer partnering with Apple TV+ for her holiday special

In 2020, Apple TV+ released  “Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special” on December 4. The special was centered around the story of how Carey saves Christmas when the North Pole is faced with a “holiday cheer crisis”. In addition to the special, Apple also debuted an exclusive song featuring Carey, Ariana Grande, and Jennifer Hudson on Apple Music.

Following its release, the 2020 Christmas special quickly climbed the charts, reaching no.1 in over 100 countries, making it a massive hit for Apple TV+. The special reportedly cost Apple a hefty $4.9 million to produce.

Since the special was such a big hit, Apple intended to provide Carey with a bigger budget for future installments. However, it seems like Mariah Carey will not be making a return to Apple TV+ this year. Instead, this year’s Christmas special, “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to All!” will air exclusively on CBS on December 20, 2022. It will also be available to stream later on Paramount+.

Filmed in New York City at Madison Square Garden, the concert special will feature the singer-songwriter performing a repertoire of her festive holiday hits, including the perennial favorite, “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

According to a new report from Deadline, MTV will also ” offer additional opportunities to view the special after the CBS broadcast.”

Apple being able to exclusively stream Carey’s Christmas specials on its streaming service was a huge get and it will be an equivalent loss. Despite all the awards Apple TV+ has won and is projected to keep on winning, it is important to keep in mind just how new Apple TV+ still is to the streaming game.
