Apple TV+ movie ‘Palmer’ records most-watched weekend ever with the streaming service

Apple TV+ original drama movie ‘Palmer‘ starring Justin Timberlake premiered on January 30, 2021. Variety reports that the movie’s popularity led to the video streaming service’s “most-watched weekend ever.” The score is achieved 15 months after its launch in November 2019.

Directed by Fisher Stevens, the $10 million Apple TV+ exclusive movie, “Palmer” is about the self-realization and redemption journey of a young boy, Sam, and a former high school footballer. While finding his place in society after serving 12 years in prison, Palmer finds himself taking care of an abandoned boy who is unique and full of life. The film is an excellent watch for a movie night and teaches to accept differences, give second chances, and how to love unconditionally.

Premier of ‘Palmer’ increased Apple TV+ viewership over the weekend

Apple TV+ offers a variety of original content, but whenever the video streaming service airs an exclusive movie title its viewership increases. Similar to the success of GreyHound starring Tom Hanks, Palmer too was profitable for the service. Variety states:

Powered by the premiere of “Palmer,” a drama starring Justin Timberlake from director Fisher Stevens, the streaming service saw a 33% increase over average viewers — also due to available sophomore seasons of M. Night Shyamalan’s “Servant” and “Dickinson.,” as well as big international numbers for “Losing Alice.”

Recently, a report by JustWatch revealed that Apple TV+ only captured a 3% market share in Q4 2020 in the United States while Netflix led the streaming industry with a 31% market share. So, if not its profits, the recent increase in viewership might uplift the service’s morale.

“Palmer” joins Apple original films including the recently announced “Snow Blind,” with Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star; Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro; “Emancipation,” from director Antoine Fuqua and starring and produced by Academy Award nominee Will Smith; “Sharper,” a new film from Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, starring and produced by Academy Award winner Julianne Moore; “The Sky is Everywhere,” based on the best-selling YA novel of the same name; and the upcoming feature “On the Rocks” from Sofia Coppola, starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones.- Apple
