Apple’s streaming service Apple TV+ may not be as popular as its competitors like Netflix, Disney+, etc. However, Apple’s original shows and movies have been picking up steam. This year has been a record-breaking year of growth for the service with it winning major awards like the Golden Globe for Ted Lasso. The Apple TV+ original series Foundation was even among the most pirated shows of 2021 accompanied by Wandavision, Loki, Arcane, and more.
Apple TV+ original ‘Foundation’ was one of the most pirated shows of 2021
The science fiction series ‘Foundation’ was one of the most anticipated Apple TV+ shows of 2021. The series is based on award-winning author, Issac Asimov’s novels. While this led many people to subscribe to the $4.99/month service, others chose to download it from torrent websites.
As reported by TorrentFreak, Foundation was one of the most pirated shows on the web in 2021 which puts Apple TV+ on that list for the first time since it launched in 2019. Disney+ original series Wandavision and Loki are in first and second place respectively while Netflix’s The Witcher comes in third place.
Here is a list of the top 10 most pirated TV shows of 2021:
- Wandavision (Disney+)
- Loki (Disney+)
- The Witcher (Netflix)
- The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Disney+)
- Hawkeye (Disney+)
- What If…? (Disney+)
- Foundation (Apple TV+)
- Rick and Morty (Cartoon Network/Netflix/HBO Max)
- Arcane (Netflix)
- Wheel of Time (Amazon Prime Video)
One thing to note is that ranking is based on the number of episodes downloaded rather than entire shows. Since Netflix usually drops all episodes of a new season at once, popular shows like La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) and Squid Game did not make the list.
TorrentFreak says the number of users searching for pirated shows has been increasing as the streaming market becomes fragmented, ” it appears that many people prefer to pirate instead of paying for ‘another’ subscription. That definitely applies to Marvel fans.”
The first season of Foundation is available to watch on Apple TV+. The series has already been renewed for its second season.
