Apple has officially launched the Apple TV app on Android, making its Apple TV+ streaming service, MLS Season Pass, and digital movie library accessible to a much wider audience. The new app is now available for download on the Google Play Store for smartphones and tablets running Android 10 or later, bringing a native experience that was long overdue.
With Android holding over 70% of the global smartphone market, Apple TV+ is now in a better position to compete with other streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video. Until now, Android users had to access Apple TV+ through a web browser or via Amazon Prime Video’s add-on subscription. The native app eliminates that hassle and offers a seamless experience optimized for Google’s mobile ecosystem.
Apple TV+ subscriptions cost $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, with a seven-day free trial for new users. Android users can subscribe directly via Google Play billing, making it easier to manage payments within the platform. The app also supports MLS Season Pass, allowing fans to stream live Major League Soccer matches with a separate subscription priced at $14.99 per month or $99 per season.
The Apple TV app on Android includes key features like Continue Watching, Watchlist, and offline downloads, ensuring users can pick up where they left off across devices. However, the initial version lacks casting support, meaning users cannot yet stream content from their phone to a larger display.
Apple TV+ has gained recognition for its high-quality originals, including Emmy-winning series like Ted Lasso, Severance, Slow Horses, and The Morning Show, as well as acclaimed films like Killers of the Flower Moon and CODA, which won Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards.
The expansion to Android aligns with Apple’s broader push to grow its services sector, which saw 14% annual growth in the company’s latest earnings report. While Apple has not disclosed subscriber numbers for Apple TV+, this move could help boost adoption by tapping into the massive Android user base worldwide.
With support for over 100 markets, including the U.S., U.K., Canada, India, France, Germany, Australia, and Brazil, the Apple TV app on Android is a significant step in expanding Apple’s streaming footprint. However, it remains to be seen whether Apple will introduce missing features like casting support in future updates.
