This year, Apple TV+ original shows and movies won many awards but the most prestigious accolade was the “CODA” winning an Oscar for Best Picture, an honor earned by a streaming service for the first time.
However, Apple TV+ is still not the “it” video streaming service like Netflix. In addition to a lack of variety, the streamer has a vibe issue for me and it just does not makes me want to take time out and watch even with an active subscription.
Apple TV+ launched in November 2019 as the all originals video streamer. Although the service offered a very limited content library at the time of launch, it did feature some of the biggest stars of Hollywood like Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon in “The Morning Show”, Jason Momoa in “See”, and Oprah Winfrey.
The COVID-19 breakout in March 2020, slowed the production of several projects but the streamer premiered “Defending Jacob” starring Chris Evans, the multi-awarding show “Ted Lasso” and others. By March 2022, Apple TV+ films and series had earned over 240 wins and 953 nominations from Academy Awards, BAFTA Film Awards, SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Daytime, and Primetime Emmy Awards, and more.
Apple TV+ content is not talked about in my social circle
But it seems like Apple TV+ is hitting home with the awards’ juries but not with the audience as much. The streamer does not share subscribers’ numbers even with the directors of their popular series like Ben Stiller maybe because it does not have many.
Unlike the hit shows on Netflix’s shows “Stranger Things” and “Wednesday”, no one in my social circle talks about the exciting Apple TV+ episode they watched the night before or the movie they watched over the weekend. Personally, I started watching “Servant” and by the end of season 2, I had completely lost interest. Since then, I have not opened the Apple TV+ app on any of my Apple devices to browse its library and watch a show/movie for leisure.
Maybe, it is because the content feels very controlled and does not resonate with my taste. I was intrigued to watch Cha Cha Smooth, but haven’t yet. Apple TV+ just does not have a library issue, it needs to fresh vibe to attract viewers. Out of all of Apple’s services, TV+ was a hard pass in 2022.
