Apple has updated its browser with the release of Safari 5.0.1. It now features support for extensions as Apple has introduced Safari Extensions Gallery with it. Apple had initially introduced extensions support with Safari 5 so that developers could start working on extensions with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript web standards. These extensions by third party developers allow users to extend browser functionality far beyond what is offered in the basic browser. Apart from the new extensions, the browser update also fixes some issues like the address book bug which allowed anyone to steal data with a few lines of code.
Apple today released SafariĀ® 5.0.1, turning on Safari Extensions and introducing the Safari Extensions Gallery. Apple introduced extensions support in Safari 5 in June so developers could begin creating extensions with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript web standards. With Safari Extensions Gallery, users can quickly find extensions that add powerful new features to Safari, from toolbars that display live web feeds to sophisticated programs that filter web content. Safari 5.0.1 allows users to download and install extensions either from the Safari Extensions Gallery or directly from a developer’s site.
Apple’s vice president of OS X Product Marketing, Brian Croll said:
Safari 5 has been a big hit, and user response to the innovative new Safari Reader has been fantastic. We’re thrilled to see so many leading developers creating great extensions and think our users are going to love being able to customize Safari.
The new Safari Extension Gallery allows user to find extensions for the applications they want. Extensions range from toolbars that displays live web feeds to sophisticated programs that filter web content. Apple had invited developers to submit their extension about two weeks ago, that is why the gallery is now full of a significant library of plug-ins. The extension gallery already has some default extension from companies like Twitter, The New York Times, The Weather Channel, Amazon, Bing and eBay.
Safari Extensions works with both Mac and Windows version of the browser.
