Apple Watch Series 7 was a disappointing launch for users. While Series 7 brought a notable redesign with larger 41mm and 45mm sizes and slimmer bezels, it did not feature significant upgrades. Now, a new report suggests Apple will release three new Apple Watch models this year with major updates. In addition, Apple Watch Series 3 “may finally be retired.”
2022 Apple Watch models to feature major internal updates
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that 2022 stands to be the “biggest in the history of the Apple Watch since the original model.” Gurman also reiterated that the Cupertino tech giant will release three new models this year; the Apple Watch Series 8, an updated Apple Watch SE, and an “Apple Watch geared toward extreme sports.” The extreme sports edition will likely be targeted towards extreme sports athletes and hikers and would be durable like G-Shock watches against shocks and drops.
As for internal upgrades, Gurman doesn’t expect “any major new health sensors” for 2022, though there is a possibility that Apple may add body temperature sensors to its wearable platform this year. However, he does say that the models will feature faster chips and “major updates to activity tracking.”
Along with the new models, Gurman believes that 2022 is the year where the Apple Watch Series 3 “may finally be retired.” Apple might discontinue Series 3 to push the SE model as an entry-level device.
I think this year will be the biggest in the history of the Apple Watch since the original model. I’m looking for three new models this fall: an Apple Watch Series 8, an Apple Watch SE and an Apple Watch geared toward extreme sports. I wouldn’t expect any major new health sensors this year, besides the possible inclusion of the oft-discussed body temperature feature. But look out for major updates to activity tracking and faster chips across the board. Also, the Apple Watch Series 3 may finally be retired.
In December 2021, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said that Apple is planning to launch three new Apple Watch models in 2022 which will include the Series 8, SE, and a “rugged” model for sports.
