Apple has unexpectedly launched the Apple Watch Series 10, deviating from the anticipated Series X. Series 10 boasts a 30% larger display and is 40% brighter than its predecessors. A new speaker system enables users to listen to music and podcasts directly on the watch for the first time. Furthermore, advanced health features, such as sleep apnea detection, make the Series 10 a remarkable device in terms of both performance and functionality.
“Around the world, Apple Watch has had an immeasurable positive impact on people by helping them stay healthy, active, safe, and connected to the things that matter to them — and it’s helped save countless lives along the way,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “Apple Watch Series 10 builds on a decade of breakthrough innovations to offer the most advanced version yet, with even more intelligence, our biggest wearable display, and a design that’s slimmer and sleeker than ever.”
Display
The Apple Watch Series 10 debuts with a groundbreaking wide-angle OLED display, the largest ever seen on an Apple Watch. This new screen offers a 30% increase in size compared to the Series 9, delivering 40% more brightness when viewed at an angle. This enhancement allows users to see an additional line of text, making it easier to glance at messages and notifications without straining. The display’s increased size also means that fonts are larger, providing better readability, especially for those with larger fingers.
The Series 10 is not just about a bigger screen; it also boasts a slimmer and lighter design. At just 9.7 mm thick, it is nearly 10% thinner than the Series 9. The use of a new aluminum casing reduces weight by up to 10%, while the introduction of Grade 5 titanium in place of stainless steel makes the Series 10 20% lighter than its predecessor. This combination of a thinner profile and lighter materials enhances comfort and usability.
S10 chip and enhanced capabilities
Powered by the new S10 chip, the Apple Watch Series 10 brings a host of performance improvements. This chip features a four-core neural engine that accelerates on-device processes such as Siri voice commands and background noise suppression during calls.
The Series 10 also introduces a new depth gauge, capable of measuring to 20 feet, and a water temperature sensor, useful for swimmers and divers. The revamped metal back integrates the smartwatch’s various antennas, contributing to its faster charging capabilities. It can reach 80% charge in just 30 minutes, though the overall battery life remains at 18 hours.
Battery life
One of the standout features of the Series 10 is its fast charging capability. The new model can reach 80% charge in just 30 minutes, making it the fastest-charging Apple Watch ever. However, while charging times have significantly improved, the battery life remains at 18 hours per charge. This balance of rapid charging with a standard battery life ensures that users can quickly top up their watch while maintaining consistent daily usage.
Speaker
For the first time, the Series 10 also includes an upgraded speaker system that allows users to play music and podcasts directly from the watch. The redesigned speaker, now 30% smaller, still delivers clear and crisp sound for both media playback and phone calls, enabling a new level of convenience for on-the-go listening.
Colors and watch bands
The Apple Watch Series 10 will be available in several colors and finishes, including new Jet Black and Rose Gold aluminum options, as well as Natural, Gold, and Slate Titanium. It will come in two sizes—42mm and 46mm—and will be compatible with existing bands from previous models.
Sleep apnea detection
Health remains a focal point for Apple with the Series 10, which includes a significant new feature: sleep apnea detection. This functionality uses the watch’s accelerometer to monitor respiratory patterns during sleep and can alert users to potential sleep apnea after 30 days of monitoring. While this feature awaits FDA approval, it represents a major step forward in wearable health technology.
Depth and Oceanic+ apps
The Series 10 will also include the Depth and Oceanic+ apps for underwater activities and a new Tides app for tracking coastal tides.
Price and availability
Pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 10 start today, with prices set at $399 for the GPS model and $499 for the cellular version. It will officially launch on September 20.
