Apple Watch Series 10 to introduce sleep apnea detection and revamped heart sensor

The upcoming release of the Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3 models promises significant upgrades, focusing on enhanced health monitoring features. A key highlight is the revamped heart rate and ECG sensor, which is expected to introduce sleep apnea detection.

This feature, which has been long anticipated, could enable users to monitor their breathing patterns during sleep and detect issues like sleep apnea, which causes interrupted breathing and excessive fatigue. Although earlier reports suggested that blood oxygen monitoring would play a crucial role in this feature, it has been disabled in U.S. models due to patent disputes.

Apple Watch Series 10 will continue to build on its legacy of health-focused innovations, allowing users to track their sleep with greater precision. By collecting sleep data over several days, the watch will provide insights into potential sleep apnea, encouraging users to seek medical advice if necessary. This adds another layer to the already robust health-monitoring ecosystem that Apple has steadily developed over the years.

In terms of design, Apple is also making substantial changes. Both the Series 10 and Ultra 3 are expected to have larger displays, with the new sizes being 44mm and 48mm. These larger displays will be complemented by a new “Reflections” watch face and a “Regatta” Hermès watch face, exclusive to the Ultra 3. The introduction of Hermès bands for the Ultra 3 is a notable shift, emphasizing Apple’s focus on merging luxury and ruggedness.

The Series 10 is also set to enhance water resistance, potentially allowing users to engage in high-speed water sports up to 20 meters deep. Along with the new Depth app, which debuted on the Apple Watch Ultra, these features cater to users who require a more durable device for extreme conditions.

Beyond health and design improvements, the Series 10 will be powered by the upgraded S10 chip, which promises increased power efficiency. A new OLED display will also contribute to this efficiency, ensuring longer battery life, which has been a key area of focus for wearable technology.

Apple’s September 9 “It’s Glowtime,” event will not only showcase the Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3 but will also feature the launch of the iPhone 16 series, iPad mini, new AirPods, and more.
