Apple reportedly testing wireless reverse charging for iPhone 17 Pro

Apple is reportedly testing a long-awaited wireless reverse charging feature for the iPhone 17 Pro, according to Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital. If implemented, this feature would allow users to wirelessly charge accessories like AirPods and Apple Watch directly from their iPhone.

Reverse wireless charging has been a staple in flagship Android smartphones for years, with Samsung and Google offering the feature on their devices. The ability to place a wireless charging-compatible accessory on the back of the phone and draw power from its battery is a convenient addition, especially for users on the go.

Apple has been working on this feature for quite some time. The iPhone 12 introduced a limited version of reverse charging with the MagSafe Battery Pack, which could be charged while attached to an iPhone plugged into Lightning power. However, Apple never enabled full-fledged reverse wireless charging, leaving many users wondering when the feature would arrive.

According to Instant Digital, Apple is currently testing 7.5W wireless reverse charging for the iPhone 17 Pro. This is a noticeable step up from the 4.5W reverse charging available via USB-C in the iPhone 15 lineup, but still far below the 15W MagSafe charging speed or the 25W Qi2 wireless charging in the iPhone 16. The leaker also mentioned that while Apple is actively testing the feature, there is no confirmation that it will be enabled at launch. Apple has historically delayed or scrapped features if they do not meet the company’s efficiency and performance standards. Heat dissipation and energy management remain key concerns for implementing reverse wireless charging, and Apple has reportedly been working on a more advanced version of the feature since at least 2023.

Apple has filed multiple patents related to reverse wireless charging over the years, and previous iPhone teardowns have shown hardware that could theoretically support the feature. However, Apple has yet to activate it. With the iPhone 17 Pro rumored to feature a major redesign, including a possible camera bar reminiscent of the Pixel 9 Pro, the introduction of reverse wireless charging would mark another significant upgrade. If enabled, the feature could provide a seamless way for users to charge their Apple accessories without needing extra cables or chargers.

Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025. Until then, it remains to be seen whether reverse wireless charging will finally make its way to the iPhone—or if it will remain another feature Apple continues to test behind the scenes.
