Saluting face, biting lip and other emojis coming to iOS, and other platforms in 2022

Ahead of World Emoji Day on July 17, Unicode Consortium has shared drafts of the expected emojis coming to iOS, Android, Facebook, Samsung, and Twitter in the upcoming Emoji 14.0 update. Apple also introduced 217 new emojis on iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 for more expressive, entertaining, and inclusive communication.

Unicode Consortium is a non-profit organization working to develop, expand and promote the use of Unicode Standard which is the foundation of all modern software, devices, and communication around the globe. Here is the list of emojis which iOS and Android users might be able to use soon.

List of draft emojis candidates coming to iOS and Android

Unicode explained that it had a longer time in creating the share draft emoji candidates because the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the launch of the new Unicode 14.0. The draft emoji candidates include new faces, hand gestures, gender-inclusive, complexion tones, and objects. Users can expect to see most of these in the final version.

New emojis

The company also posted explanations of a few new emojis.

  • Hand with Index Finger and Thumb Crossed can serve as either the finger heart gesture popular with K-Pop fans, or any other gesture that uses the index finger and thumb, such as ‘money’.
  • Coral is commonly used as an icon to discuss climate change, given the impact of rising global temperatures on coral reefs.
  • Person with Crown is a gender-inclusive alternative to the existing emojis for 👸 Princess and 🤴 Prince.
  • Pregnant Man and Pregnant Person are new, and recognize that pregnancy is possible for some transgender men and non-binary people. These are additions to the existing 🤰 Pregnant Woman emoji.
  • The above additions will mean that nearly all emojis can have default a gender neutral option, with choice to use a woman or man where relevant. A few exceptions remain, which are being reviewed, as per this Unicode Emoji Subcommittee report from 2020.

The final version of the approved emojis will be part of Unicode 14.0 and Emoji 14.0, scheduled to release on September 14, 2021. And will be available on most platforms by 2022.
