Facebook launches new Campus section in its app for college students in the U.S.

Today, the social media platform has launched a new social space for students, Facebook Campus. As part of the Facebook app, this college-only space is specially designed for students to find, friend, and connect with other classmates in their classes and on their campuses. The new section will allow students to be more involved in the activities and communities of their colleges.

Recalling its origin as a college-only network, Facebook says that with the launch of the new section for college students, it is returning to its roots “to help students make and maintain these relationships, even if they’re away from their college.” In addition, the social platform also hopes to keep students connected to their college community after the suspension of face-to-face classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new Campus section of the Facebook app will have the select colleges’ profiles and a student’s gateway to their university’s profile on the Facebook Campus is his/her college email ID and graduating year. The announcement explained how it worked,

“To create a Campus profile, all students need is their college email and graduation year. Other information such as their major, classes, hometown and minor are optional. Once a Campus profile is set up, students can discover Groups and Events unique to their school, and connect with classmates who share similar interests. When content is shared on Campus, only people within Campus will see it.”
