Although the new 2022 Apple TV 4K has the same external design as the 2021 model, its internal design is different. The power of the A15 Bionic enabled Apple to remove the internal fan from the new Apple TV 4K which also reduced the set-top box’s thickness by 10% and weight by 50%.
Introduced in iPhone 13 last year, the A15 Bionic chip is currently used in iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models. Built on a 5nm process, the A15 processor features 6-core CPU (2 performance and 4 efficiency cores), up to 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine to deliver faster performance and improved power efficiency.
A15 Bionic chip efficiency eliminated the need for an internal fan in the 2022 Apple TV 4K
Taking advantage of the powerful A15 processor, the tech giant took a step to honor its commitment to the environment and removed the internal fan from the new Apple TV 4K. The company explained in the press release:
The new Apple TV 4K is designed to minimize its impact on the environment, using nearly 30 percent less power than the previous generation while achieving more powerful performance.7 The efficiency gains of A15 Bionic eliminate the need for an internal fan, resulting in a more compact design and contributing to a 25 percent reduction in carbon footprint over the previous generation.
The removal of the fan has made the new set-top box thinner and lighter than its predecessor. In comparison to 425 gram 2021 model, the new Wi-Fi model weighs 208 grams and the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model weighs 214 grams.
