A lot of people have been reporting issues with jailbreaking using the new blackra1n tool by George, especially iPod Touch 3G owners. Some of these issues have to do with the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again. For those stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device, here are a few important pointers to keep in mind during the process:
- Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
- Download the purplera1n tool to your desktop. Some users have reported issues of the application crashing or having issues with rights on Vista or 7. This should fix those issues. For more convenience. run it as an administrator.
- Make sure no other software is running when you jailbreak to avoid interference.
- If your device doesn’t boot for a long time, hold down the power and home buttons and restart it. If it tells you to connect to iTunes, something must have gone wrong and you might have to restart the process. I know this is annoying, but it has worked for some people after some tries. It does work.
- You won’t lose your data by jailbreaking. Only a fresh firmware restore could mean that your apps might go away, but they can be synced back using iTunes.
- If you have a white screen turn off the device by holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and boot it again.
- If iTunes keeps popping up, use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go to the task manager and kill all iTunes processes which includes iTunesHelper.exe. This can cause interference with the process too.
- Strangely, doing the process on different computers has also worked for some people.
In the end, keep in mind that blackra1n really works. I tried it on my iPod Touch 2G 8GB, and it worked on the first try. It only got stuck when running Cydia for the first time. I had to reboot using the Power + Home buttons trick, but after that, it has been really smooth.

Update: George Hotz has tweeted about an important issue that most people are facing. You’ll have to check if your iPod Touch 2G or 3G, 8GB model starts with MB or MC. For MC it won’t work, so you should restore it back to the old firmware. It works fine for the ones that start with MB. I guess that should answer most of the issues people are facing with blackra1n.

i have jailbroken my ipod touch 3g about 5 times already with blackra1n… the reason being that i jailbreak it and all is well i put cydia on or whatever and then… it could be while downloading an application or if i turn my ipod off then when i turn it on a get the “connect ipod to itunes” screen and i have to restore it all over again…. ive done this about 5 times already and its getting annoying- how can i get by this if my ipod gets stuck so i dont have to keep restoring and resyncing it all over each time??? please help….
you have to run blackra1n again if its 3G iPod touch because since it a tethered jailbreak you need to boot the system every time you turn it off

Hi, I have an iPod touch 3gen 8gb 3.1.1. I managed to get it to the point that it showed the geohot image, but then it died. It WILL NOT boot back up.
iTunes says that it detects an ipod in recovery, but blackra1n just says “waiting for phone”.
If I hold the power and home button together, it disconnects the USB connection and then reconnects it (iTunes then prompting me to restore). The screen stays black, no logo, no anything.
When I clicked restore, it downloaded 2.1.2. Yes, two-point-one-point-two, instead of the ipsw for 3.1.1. I have no way to see if it is mb or mc. When I tried to manually restore using a 3.1.2 firmware, it says its not the right type. When 2.1.2 is used (the one itunes downloaded) it says extracting etc but then gives me a 1600 error.
Any help? Please? I'm rather stuck… :( I don't care if its jb, I just need music
I had this problem myself for months now and i finaly figuared it out. Once your ipod wants you to restore just run blackra1n again and it should restart your iPod without loosing any information from your iPod
hold down the power and home buttons for 15sec and letgo home but still holding power for 2 more sec and there you go. enjoy Blackra1n tethered jailbreaking

If your using windows vista…DO NOT USE COMPATIBILITY MODE. It will NOT work. Keep it running in vista but as an admin, and it will run after that.

I found out it doesn't work at all.
Yes they do work for some of you who was lucky to get model start MB.
I jut found out i got the MC one….what a crap…
Anyway I did use my friend's iPod Touch with MB model.
It did work.
and that was first try…..
man.

WOW after soo many hours of trying to jailbrak an ipod touch 1g, i finally got it!! DO NOT RUN COMPATIBILITY MODE ON VISTA, IT WILL SCREW UP THE JAILBREAK 100% BELIEVE ME I HAVE HAD THE EXPERIENCE. ALSO MAKE SURE U KILL ITUNES HELPER AND U ARE GOOD TO GO. GERORGE IS THE MAN!
Ok, plug your ipod back up, and try to “restore” from itunes. It should automatically download 3.1.2 not even 3.1.1, because .2 is the newest one. and, if the restore gets stuck on “verifying restore with apple” try disconnecting the ipod and connecting into a different usb port. it should go back to normal.
to find out your model go to settings – general – about. you probably have MC cuz i do and thats what happens to me
You can also try going into DFU mode from there, hold both buttons for ten seconds, then just let go of power, keep holding home for ~20 seconds, itunes will now detect it in “recovery mode” even though it's DFU, and it won't show the serial number
yeah I have the MC model and I've tried and tried, it just won't wont turn on once it reboots.

You can wipe the iPod after jailbreaking by running BlackRa1n in XP compatibility mode with ituneshelper running…..and it will wipe the iPod and get stuck in recovery. At that point, just connect it to iTunes and do a restore.
We can this apparent error by BlackRa1n to wipe the iPod for a reload…..iTunes won’t have a clue.
Having said that…..I bought an Android phone. I got tired of having Apple dictate to me what is possible with my device. But I still like my iPod Touch. I just won’t be buying an iPhone. It would be a step backward from Android.

it worked, I have the latest ipod 32 GB 3.1.2 and it was so simple, ps don't use compatibility mode. Anyways this is only one of the two steps I rem. cauz I jailbroke my previous iphone, the next step is through WIN SCP of something to open up the permission levels and stuff does somebody know where to go for that?
This doesn't “F**k your iPod up”. If you read the instructions it simply states it does not work on all iPods/iPhones. I know it's annoying (3 times myself from other tuts) but you can just restore via iTunes anyhow.
That's because 8GB is still 2G.

Hey geohot, my model number is eligible for the jailbreaking and everything -but I'm still having issues. I'm currently running windows vista ultimate, I did a fresh restart, fresh download, without letting itunes open once (itouch was connected whole time). I opened blackra1n as administrator and not as admin. both worked fine, except after it's finished being jailbreaked. I have to force the reboot, and no app icon is portrayed. I tried running it again, as you suggested -but it didn't work. Just got another confirmation of the jailbreak. then I tried running blackra1n being treated as Windows XP service pack etc etc. but jailbreak doesn't work at all through that process.
so it's working, but no icon is shows up

3.incase language setting is other then english…make sure it sets on english.
4.Soon as you see Geohot face…didconnect your usb cable.

A1 isn't the model number they are talking about. Mine starts with A1 (on the back) as well, but the model people are talking about is the model number seen in Settings>General>About. Yours most likely is an MC. Restore using iTunes.

I have tried everything(fresh restore, ending processes, holding power and home…etc) posted in every thread and was very doubtful of blackra1n working for me. I got blackra1n to work for me by putting phone into DFU mode myself instead of letting blackra1n do it…hope this helps someone.

I have a Touch model MB with 3.1.2. When I ran blackra1n the screen would go back and I never got the guy’s boot logo.
If you are getting the black screen instead of the boot logo with the picture of the guy, follow CTalor’s instructions.
1. Leave your Ipod Touch unplugged.
2. Run blackra1n and click on “make it rain”
3. THEN and ONLY Then, Plug your Ipod Touch in.

I have a 8GB 2nd gen Ipod touch, which is an MB so should work. But it doesn't.
purplera1n on Windows XP quickly terminates abnormally (Event BEX).
purplera1n on OSX sits “waiting” forever.
In either case I get the recovery graphic on the ipod, with itunes popping up wanting to reload it.
Any suggestions?

I have an ipod touch 1G, were always using QuickPWN on Windows or PWnageTool on a mac and never had a problem, i even used RedSn0w after the QuickPWN project was down. Now i am trying Blackra1n, The iPod rebooted after the jailbreak, but when i installed Winterboard form Cydia ( and Mobile Substrate ), Cydia ask to reboot. Well my ipod doesn't boot anymore…I see the Apple logo and after a few seconds and then it turns off. Now mr. Geohotz think he found a “better and faster” way to jailbreak iPod/iPhone, but it's just PURE SHIT! So i suggest to use Redsn0w on Windows, or better PwnageTool on a mac, it's longer indeed plus you need a modified .ispw, but in the end…it WORKS!
Me again, i finally managed to enter DFU mode and, “If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.” is bullshit, blackra1n managed to “jailbreak” again…but couldn't restart properly. So for those who the ipod doesn't restart anymore, make sure the device is turned off, hold the Home button for 5 sec., then hold the power button while maintaining the Home button until you see the itunes logo with the connector DO NOT RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON AT ANY TIME! i don't know why but …it's not the same DFU mode…Now in itunes you can restore you ipod with an ORIGINAL .ipsw, downloaded or on your computer. Voila, now if you want a jailbroken device, i suggest you download a custom jailbroken .ipsw from the net and restore again from that file in itunes if you on a PC, and to use PwnageTool on a MAC.

Finally I managed to get the JB working in my iPod touch 3G, model MC008PY.
I was using it normally, installing several apps from the Appstore. I then downloaded Blackra1n in Windows Vista. Before plugging the USB cable, I pressed Control+Alt+Supr in order to open the Task Manager. In the tab Processed, I ended the process iTunesHelper.exe. I then plugged the iPod with USB. Then right-clicked blackra1n and “run as Admin” (or something like that, as I use windows in spanish). Confirmed opening the file and clicked “make it ra1n”. The image of blackra1n appeared and rebooted in just 15-20 seconds. Clicked OK in the message blackra1n shows you confirming blackra1n is done and the app was there, in the iPod. Opened it, installed Cydia, then added the source http://apt.macosmovil.com and installed the app “AppSync para OS 3.1 (3.1….)” and then shutted down the iPod. Restarted it, but did again the blackra1n thing just to start it up, because it's tethered. And then at last I could install any cracked App and the ones from the appstore worked fine. AT LAST !!!
Please note that I never had to restore anything. iPod was already in version 3.1.2.

I have an MB model and I also can not JB the dang thing. I have read all the blogs and tried it all, many times still nothing. I never get the photo just the itunes screen and then it hangs on the reboot. I even reloaded, then had to restore apps. That took awhile!! Guess I'll just wait til something else comes along. Ok so when you’ve done that open up balckra1n and unlock your iPod and hit make it ra1n when the screen goes black hold down the power button and home button until it reeboots. This is the way I did it as I did research for a long time how to jailbreak when the jailbreakme.com website went down. I hope that help if not sorry and I hope something works. Oh yeh one more thing if this doesnt work try pwnage tool 3.4 it jailbreaks the firmware for you all you have to do is sync it in iTunes. Ok Bye Chuck
obviously you are doing something different, I have the identical ipod mand still cannot get it to work. What is that thing you are installing after the reboot, it looks like it is for a MAC? I know you said you are using VISTA but are you doing something with a MAC?

I cannot get it to restart. I get the kids face and such for about 20 seconds then the screen goes black forever and nothing will come back on until I manually start Ituunes to recover the Ipod. You did say you have a 3rd generation 8 gigabyte Ipod Touch, correct? Starting with the model number MC? You don't have to restore everything when turning off and on. Only re-running blackra1n it is enough. This is the way it works now for ipod touch 3G 32Gb, like mine.
in you iPod go to Settings –> General –> Information. You'll see there the model.
I think for your iPod is not tethered. But the best way to know if just trying. If recovery appears just re-run blackra1n in order to turn it on.
You DO need Wifi to install Cydia. It is mandatory. Not possible with data cable.
I have iPod touch 3G 32Gb. I think your model is not 3rd generation, because minimum size is 16Gb for 3rd gen. Maybe yours is 2nd or 1st. Make sure which iPod touch you have before everything as the process may be different. Also check your firmware version, as it should be 3.1.2

just downloaded software 3.1.2 for my ipod touch 1st gen. when i go to settings, then general, there isnt anything there about bluetooth. i dont know how to get bluetooth onto my ipod. got any ideas??

I did try on my iphone 3G. Run Blackra1n and click make it rain. As soon as the iphone went black, i hold down the power and home button. But guess what the screen still shows the USB cable and itunes. Which means it is NOT successful!!! Can anybody actually post or suuggest a better video/idea in solving this issue cause i have been trying to jailbreak for few times. And each time i have to restore my iphone. Lucky for me my iphone does not crash.

Finally got mine (MC version 8gig itouch) to work. I down loaded the RC2 file to my c drive. Took the blackra1n file off compatability mode (under properties) after that I just click the file and then click make it rain. After the itouch rebooted I installed Cydia then turned off the itouch and when it restarted I ran blackra1n one more time until the itouch turned on and then disconnected my itouch and everything works fine. Now I dont have a clue what to do with this cydia program, so gota figure that one out now.

PROBLEM after blackra1n!!!
did the break on my ipod touch 3rd gen 32gb and worked.. installed cydia, etc.. but then i powered it down (turned off) to conserve power and once it came back up again i got the “sync with itunes” screen so i had to restore to pre-jailbreak… one one forum someone posted that you can restart it sans-restore by running blackra1n again, but that's not too practical if you don't have a pc close.. anyone else get this? any fixes?

Use RC2 for MC models. no need to do any tricks, just download the file, connect itouch, and run it. Works on one try.
After you power down, you have to run blackra1n one more time on the itouch and after that everything works fine.

I have a 2nd gen itouch 3.1.2 and running vista sp2. whenever i tried to “make it rain” the program would get stuck at “entering recovery.” Finally i came across your reply. i opened up task manager and killed the process ituneshelper, then i went into blackrain properties and took off run in compatibility mode and just clicked on black rain. With 5 seconds blackrain was workthing. Thanks alot for your advice

after i jailbroke the itouch 3.1.2 everytime i turn off the itouch and turn it back on it goes back into recovery mode what do i do??
That means it's a tethered jailbreak. You'll have to connect it to your PC and run blackra1n again to make it work after restart, else it'll go into recovery mode.

Hi i have upgraded my 3g iphone 8g to the 3.1.2 and was easy, but the problem i’m facing now is that when i restored my iphone applications from itune, they open and close directly i cannot use the, so i tried something and it worked, I re downloaded some applications from itune again and sync those newly downloaded apps works fine, any application already on the itune will not work any help as i have 190 apps and some are more than 100mb i cannot download them all :)

Got there in the end. As previously stated, kill all ipod processes in task manager and don't bother with the xp compability switch and make it rain. I'm running vista.

Ok, this is so frustrating! I don’t get it! I downloaded it again, got Cydia. Went to install winterboard and then it said it had to reboot (the ipod). I hit reboot and then it said I need to plug into itunes. Itunes wouldn’t do anything until I hit “restore” which then erased blackra1n and all my other applicatio…ns that were already on there and now I have to restore those from my backup. So it’s a vicious cycle. Is there a solution??

WOo!! Really weird, I did all the steps and everything, but I can turn off and turn on without plugging it in and starting blackra1n!! The only real thing I can think of is when I plugged it into my car charger, maybe it tricked it into thinking I already restarted or something. FREAKING AWESOME THOUGH!!, love the themes on Cydia! You don’t need to restore it! When you restart it, just connect it to your computer and run blackra1n again.
Is there anyway that this jailbreak will be lasting using blackra1n RC3? I have an 8 gig iPod Touch with OS 3.1.2. I’ve been able to load Cydia properly, but my issue is everytime I turn off then turn on the touch, it shows the screen requesting the touch be connected to iTunes. I run blackra1n everytime this screen comes up, and then blackra1n reboots the touch, and I am able to use it normally.
Is there anyway I can avoid this issue of having to run blackra1n everytime I turn on the touch? Because if a computer with blackra1n isn’t near and I were to turn it on, I can’t use it.

My problem is when i go to download blackra1n, i hit run both times then a dialogue box pops up saying “the procedure entry point sqlite3_prepare_v2 could not be located in the dynamic link library SQLite2.dll.” and nothing else happens.Also no matter how many times i hit ok on the dialogue box, it won’t go away. The comment was specific to ITouch 3g, 8gb models that start with “mc”. Does that target only 8gb? or is that 8, 32, and 64?

Im having the exact smae problems as W2002. Every time i turn off my ipod touch with 3.2.1 firmware it requests that it be connected to itunes. What’s the deal with that? I had to recover from that 4 times already and its a pain in the ass to put all the music and vid’s back on it. I have huge problem.
Once I turn on itouch 3g 32g 3.1.2, it shows the itunes plug-in.
When I restore it, it stops half-way, lags, and then returns to the “plug into itunes” sign. (the itunes on my CPU gets screwed)

It will be a tethered jailbreak, so that when it turns off, you will have to run blackra1n everytime u need to turn it back on.

yeah same ere except mine just boots and stays on the apple logo, i can hold home+power button and it resets but gets stuck at the same damn spot…. how do i fix this and i have also tryed on boot, launching blackra1n which does nuthin :( heeeallp
Guys, it clearly states on this site that for the IPod Touch, it’s a tethered jailbreak only. Meaning, the device is jailbroken, but if you turn off the IPod, then you will need to rerun blackra1n again to get into the IPod menu. From all that i have read, there are no hot fixes for this at the moment until they come up with a better solution.
what happens if blackrain wont even run. after i start it it keeps saying that an error occurred and it must close. really frustrating cause my ipod turned off and now i cant reboot. and doesnt restoring it erase everything on the ipod?

If you have a 64GB Touch (3G) with a serial starting with MC – DO NOT use the blackra1n jailbreak. I repeat, DO NOT try to jailbreak it. I tried on my 64GB touch and bricked the device. It went to some “firmware restore” mode, then turned off for good.
Took it back to the Apple Store and they even replaced it because they could not get response out of it. I believe comment #19 here had the same problem.

Well my ipt 3g 32 gb had some very weird problems, whenever i clicked make it ra1n, the ipod goes into recovery mode, george picture never comes up and only the connect to itunes pic was there. The program shows a ‘clicked’ make it ra1n which says going into recovery. Waited for about 1 hrs + and nothing happened. Is there anything im doing wrong?
I have an iPod 3rd gen that starts with Model MC. I’ve tried every single trick that i’ve seen in youtube and in every forum including the power button and home one, running it as an administator from c: local drive, and deleting the tasks and none of them have worked. However once playing with the iPod’s setting and the blackrain properties I managed to get GeoHot’s face on my iPod wich is an MC model and i had restored it just before that happened during the jailbreak but it got stuck on that part and never rebooted. i didn’t knew that restoring it might make the Model Number an MB or at least i’ve heard something like that. It was just pure luck and I really don’t remember what i did to get to the GeoHot’s image part but I know it can be done and by the way I have tried the jailbreak many time and it hasn’t bricked or anything like that i just gets stuck on the black screen then i turn it off and on again and it starts like if nothing had happened with all my music, apss and stuff. I really don’t know what else to do right now i’m hoping for Blackweather to release something new for 3rd Gens MCs. the only thing i’m missing is trying the jailbreak on other computer. If anything of this happens to your ipod all you got to do is keep playing with the blackrain properties and your computer until u get to the black screen. Why in the he’ll should I always reconnect blackrain wenever I turned on my iPod.. This is a waste of time.. Any other thing to Do with this.. Do something.. I just buy ds iPod for a convinient work purposes and time consumption.
Hi, I own an iPod touch 2nd gen with a 3.1.2 firmware and it’s jailbroken. Only problem is is that I can’t turn it off/let it be low batt bcuz when i try to turn it on, it’s always on the restore mode. Same goes if I download something on Cydia and it needs to reboot.. Pls help!
So I have everything jailbroken and I’m good with that and then I want to download winterboard and for that you have to restart the ipod. When I do that my iPod just shows the connect to iTunes sign.
From what I understand, I should just go to the blackra1n website and re jailbreak it again? Should that fix everything? Will everything, including winterboard, be on my iPod?

I just got my ipod touch 3g 32gb and i want to jailbreak it. I downloaded blackra1n and ran it and everything was goinggreat it found the device it apparantly jailbroke it and then it came up with the message your ipod is now jailbroken wait for reboot or something along those lines. so i waited and waited and about 40 minutes later the ipod decided to reboot. i have had a good look and cannot find the app anywhere.I have ran blackra1n a good 10 times butt the same thing keeps happening. I know it’snot working because my m8 jailbroke is ipod touch 3g 32gb at the same time as mine and his has lots of new apps. My ipod has still works fine but it’s still not jailroken. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks hunter.
My Ipod 32g seems to be jailbroken but when I sync an application all I get is an unknown error 0xE8008001. I have updated my usb drivers as suggested in another thread but to no avail.

when i downloaded blackra1n, igot two days use out of the programs, then when it ran out of charge fully, it wouldnt charge it went to the restart screen, the screen dimed, and then it went out. i despratly need help.

hey. okay i have the same problem as you guys. I think i know what it is. in order to jailbreak your ipod touch into 3.12 using blackra1n. You must not updated your ipod touch into 3.12 using itunes. Otherwise your ipod touch will be continuing going into recovery mode or black screen during the jailbreak process.

Used it for 10 min max. ya know just scrolling through all the apps looking at what was offered. The first one I tried to load crashed the phone. i have an itouch 1st gen 8 gig 3.1.2 update jailbroke with blackrain had power off prob so erased all settings and content within settings on itouch also had cydia installed now pc and itunes wont discover it dfu does good but when preparing ipod and ipod restarts windows again loses itouch so no restore what did i do to my itouch that it is useless?

I had 3.1.2 on my itouch i reset settings within the itouch which was a no no, seems blackrain moves boot files to another folder so if it crashes on u.. ur stuck.. i have been goofing with it for 2 months now got closer than before and when it gets into the restore and the apple logo and progress bar show up the pc nor itunes detects my itouch is their something i can do and has others had this prob… 3rd post with no help so far
You have to install i tunes…..( and shut it down when using blackra1n ) ….
What if the ipod 8g model starts with MA
It worked fine for my 8GB (2nd Gen I believe)!
Dont use compatibility mode and quit itunes before that.
lastly if itunes auto launches, just quit it and blackra1n will continue to run.

I jailbroke by 8g 3.1.2 ipod touch today using blackrain RC3 and it worked fine until I reboot. I re-jailbroke it again and it works 100% and the model number does have MC in it. As long as I don’t reboot it, it does not ever to connect to iTunes, otherwise it does everytime.

click search
type in WINTERBOARD
locate it and click on it
click install
confirm
then return to cydia
click on the home button
Now you have winterboard which is the app that alows you to store themes. if you want a specific theme go back to cydia and search for whatever you desire

ok so i have previously jailbroken my itouch 2g using blackrain on 3.1.2 it worked prefectly. i got a iphone for chistmas and decided to delete everything from my itouch and clean it out, so i went to setting general reset and deleted all cotent and settings. when i did that it said it would take about 2 hours but its been 11 days and still hasnt finished rebooting. its stuck on the apple logo and ive tried to rejialbreak and restore the itouch but thoughout sometime in the process it always gets stuck on the apple logo. IPod touch 8GB (MC): didn’t see the limitation with MC models … but it worked fine ! Until i reboot several days later … then it stayed frozen on the iTunes icon. Nothing else to do but DFU mode.

I jail broke my ipod and it was working fine then i turned it off and i knew i had to run blackra1n again to open, it is stuck in recoverymode and when i run black ra1n it says an error occured so blackra1n has to be closed i triedd it 10 times and it didnt work. Ok, I got a question for any buddy with the brains. I have a iPod touch 2 gen with 3.1.2 firmware on it. So I downloaded the blackrai1n, and then did all the steps in the discription…/plug in iPod, run blackra1n, click make it rain. Then it jailbroke it in about 5 seconds, so I let it re-boot and do it’s thing and once it was done I ran it a second time, it went well just like the first time.. So it jailbroke fine and I installed cydia and all that ext. ext. Finally I turned my iPod off for the night, but I fergot to check my email, so I go to turn it back on and and it shows the connect to iTunes picture and won’t turn on. So I reastore my iPod and try to jailbreak it again but now it won’t jailbreak… Any advise? I could use some help, any buddy… Help me Obi won Konobi your my only hope. LOL
you doesn’t have to restore it when your iPhone need to reboot,just plug it to your PC and then run blackr1an > make it rain just once and it’ll reboot in a second !
Oh, and one more thing I fergot to mention. The second time I tryed to jailbreak it I used the compatibillity thing with the blackra1n.

I have a 3G Ipod Touch with a model MC that I jailbroke. It froze on me using Cydia. Went to a completely black screen. Restored in Itunes and apparently was fine BUT I now cannot access the music on my ipod through Itunes. It keeps saying cannot sync error -54. Any help? Is this a permissions or admin issue? I can use master commander or iphone browser to manually add music but the ipod does not read it. It does when added to downloads and can be played through dtunes but that is not what I am looking to do.

Hi, I have an ipod touch 2ndgen. i downloaded the balckra1n at blackra1n.com, and chose the Windows one, and I saved it. I ran the app and i get the connect to itunes screen and then a flash of white. Then the program says that I have finished jailbreaking. It goes to the screen with the silver apple in the middle, and the Auto play thing on my computer pops up. Then, when I check if the app is in my ipod, it is not there. i do not know how to check if it is a “MC” or not, and I don’t want to pay to upgrade to 3.1.2. Can someone please help me? this doesn’t seem to work on the new white 3gs phones i have black one that has no problem but the white one keeps crashing. after it told to plug it back into itunes i had the blackra1n window still opened so it booted my phone back on i hope i dont have to do this every time i have to turn my phone off!

i’ve been trying to JB it since forever !
Because it is a TETHERED Jailbreak, and is actually stated on all sites. If you actually POWER OFF your iPod or iPhone (Not just have the screen go off, but fully powered off – such as when your battery gets really low, or you hold the power button and slide to power up. The next time that you turn on your device, you HAVE TO Have it connected to your USB Cable, connected to your PC or MAC… Then power it up, when you see the itunes and the USB Logo, simply run blackra1n again, just as you did the first time, and it will then boot up without any issues. I know this is the confusing part, but it REALLY is actually MEANT to work this way.
It’s the same when you first Jailbreak it using Blackra1n. It will just go back to the USB and iTunes image, and all you have to do (even after this initial jailbreak) is simply to run blackra1n again (because it was powered off and rebooted during the jailbreak) — and it will work for you. I guess it’s just not explained in an easy to understand way in the tutorials…

Ok So I had an 8G 3g Itouch and i jailbroke well I attempted to and it didnt work. I returned it to apple complaining of the screen being able to move and easily pushed in. They gave me a new itouch and I left. I went to my house and it jailbroke in less then 40 seconds. I left the screen on overnight by accident and it automatically turned off. I synced it back to the computer and perfectly it re-jailbroke. It was acting very slow and laggy-like so I turned it off on purpose to see if that would help. I synced it back up and BAM! It wouldnt re jailbreak! Anyone know why this happend? My Model is MC And it still worked! Is this because the second time i turned it off on purpose? Now everytime it turns off i Have to sync it back up even those its not jailbroken. So it acts like a jailbroken itouch because it used to be one but now its not and im getting tired of having to re-sync whenever it turns off because it doesn’t know that its a regular itouch!

When I use the program it does everything as it would then it goes to the reboot and never does, it sits on a black screen and dosnt budge. I had my daughter plug my Ipod in today and she told me she click yes for the updates and what not when my ipod was jail broken during the 3.1.2 stage. Mine too!! I have no idea what’s going on. This is the fourth time I’ve tried, and every time it gets stuck on “entering recovery” with the little iTunes/USB logo. Mine’s 32gb, but other than that it’s the same.

Sup guys now its very simple first of you have to have the firmware file for 3.1.2 you can check this in (my computers inda different to others so just keep looking and if you dont find it download from the web) C:/documents and settings/yourusername/apple computer/…../ipod updates or something along those lines sorry not o my normal computer anyway when you go to restore it (you must have either 3.1.3 or higher in this case or there is no need you can jailbreak it anyway) how SHIFT when you click the Restore button and a screen will pop up then find your 3.1.2 firmware and downgarde your ipod touch from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 this takes a while

I followed all the instructions to the t for jailbreaking my iPod touch 2gen, and the first time the app icon didn’t show up, so I tried again. It said it was “entering recovery” for about a half hour, so I tried rebooting to try the install a third time. Yeah, all of my songs, playlists, photos, etc are gone now.
Figured, “third time’s the charm” and went for it again. And it’s stuck. Again. On “entering recovery.” And has been there for an hour, with the little USB–>iTunes logo on the screen.

Okay, i jailbroke it, but it wont reboot. Its just a black screen on my ipod, with the blackra1n tap saying “Done, wait for reboot” on my computer. Its been forever and ive done this twice. Its pissing me off. Wtf?

if you read the article above, every time you turn it on you have to run blackra1n. it won’t re-jailbreak your ipod, burt it has to, that’s why it’s considered ‘tethered’

i cant find any diff with the 3.1.2 to the 3.1.3 so just stay with 3.1.2 and if you upgraded and want to go back all you have to do it torrent download or just find a way to get 3.1.2 OS (without downloading from itunes) and downgrade by holding shift and click restore and then select the 3.1.2 file. make sure the extension is .ipsw and your good to jailbreak. im not sure how well this works on iphones but ipod touch should be good.

When it does work go to iTunes and click on ur ipod and SHIFT click the UPDATE button. it will show u a browser looking for .ipsw file u should have a backup .ipsw that u downloaded b4 jailbreaking find it and select it! CONGRATS u have a normal iPod! WITH UR APPS AND MUSIC AND EVERYTHING IN IT!!!!! PS: if u dont have backup .ipsw then u can download and .ipsw and SAVE it on ur desktop. I successfully jailbroke with blackra1n. However, about 5 minutes after I jailbroke (and after I had already installed Cydia), the screen prompting me to connect to iTunes opped up. It is now stuck like that and I cannot get around it.

Bob, if you really do have the LATE 2G model, you stand a chance at jailbreaking. However, most MC models (particularly 32GB and 64GB) are unable to jailbreak and/or downgrade.
If you are talking about Geohot “…it didn’t show the man” while you were jailbreaking with Blackra1n, it simply doesn’t work on 3.1.3 firmware.
You have to downgrade your iPod’s firmware back down to 3.1.2, then you may jailbreak with Blackra1n.

EVERYBODY if u have a problem when ur ipod boots and shows the guy crying or watever… it means ur ipod is in recovery… to fix that plug in PC and run iTunes. iTunes should tell u that ur ipod is in RECOVERY MODE AND NEEDS TO BE RESTORED. And that is excatly wat u have to do!
Now if u plug in ur PC and iTunes doesnt say u have plugged in any iPod then u gotta run blackra1n again and again if that doesnt work then just WAIT. thats wat i did and my iPod MC 2GN 8GB worked FINE!

Alright, so i clicked “make it rain” it ‘jailbroke’ my iTouch and i downloaded Cydia. Now i tried downloading a ‘package’ or something and it did all the loading and stuff, then said, Reboot Device. i tapped it. now it says i need to “restore” my iTouch to iTunes, it has the little cord symbol pointing to the Itunes icon. is this bad..? :o

This means that your jailbreak is tethered. I’m guessing you have an MC model iPod touch. Every time you turn it off, or, let the battery run out, the jailbreak goes away.
Solution; don’t turn off your iPod.

im having trouble with blackra1n where ive jailbroken 2 devices n now i cant get it 2 work like when i get other ipods 2 jail break i cant get the blackra1n program 2 run it keeps sayin that the blackrain has no avn server or sumthin n i go and use other computers 2 jailbreak the ipods (both of them are 2gens 1 is an mc n the other mb)but the blackra1n jail break aint runnin at all n i know what im doin. so what is the problem with the program im not using a mac im using a pc. it pops up with the make it rain butten but then when i hit it it says that theres a problem with the server or what ever n it askes me if i wanna report the problem what am i doin wrong
That means your jailbreak is TETHERED, khan21. Google that if you don’t know what it means.

Help. I decided to reset my blackra1n jailbroken itouch 2g by going to the General menu and choosing reset all. The ipod is now stuck with apple logo and the cog which sometimes looks like its working. After about 10 mins I can see the ipod switch off and then come on again without the cog. Then the cog will show and it looks like its starting to do something but then it repeats everything above. Would it help if I let the battery run down? I connect the ipod to my computer all the time this is going on but itunes doesn’t recognise its connected. I did not once when I held down the home and power button keys to shut it down and then restart that my computer made a sound as though a device was connected but nothng else happened – any ideas anyone or am I screwed because of using RESET option?

This is a TETHERED JAILBREAK.
Tethered means that when you turn the JailBroken iPod OFF (or let it run out of battery), you MUST connect it to you PC and Run Blackra1n again.
Its not as bad as you think. Honestly, it uses 7% of battery to boot up, so I never turn it off. Just put it in sleep mode.
When it DOES turn off, and you are tethered, do not worry. When you try to turn it back on, the Recovery Mode screen comes up (Its a USB cord, arrow, and iTunes icon). Just connect to your computer, run blackra1n once, do not go into iTunes, and its all set. You won’t loose any info/apps. Its just because Apple hates people Jailbreaking, so they decided to put a small iBoot chip in the newer models, which forces people to tether it.
JailBreaking does void warranty, and there are risks involved. It my slow down your iPod. But to restore the firmware, just Restore, and its fine.

i had that problem too and i had done a bunch of stuff to my computer and haddent put music on it in a while but i had it jailbroken and when i went to go and upload music and my movies it didnt recconize it then it would do like a quik sync, where it would say it was syning for like 30 sec's then stop but it would never upload music. i evenutaly just had to restore it to my compter so it recconized it, just try to restore it
Okay, the same thing happened to me today. What you will need to do is hold the power button and the home button for about 1 minute release the power but but keep holding the home button for about 10seconds then it should turn off. plug it back into your computer and then run blackra1n again, it should work. I got worried when it didn't turn off either i was about to through it threw the window….I hope this helped.
thats because you updated to the newest version of itunes which doesnt work with jailbroken devices so you need to uninstall itunes and find an older version online. 9.0.3 is the best!

I have Iphone 3GS – its been fine up until now, yesterday the battery ran out so, like usual i connected the iphone to the laptop, ran blackra1n (which usually always worked), so the phone comes up with the geohot screen like its about to reboot and work fine, but the screen goes black, and then back on the apple/connect to iphone screen. Tried this several times and no joy.

You can down grade your ipod to 3.1.2 and then jailbreak it here the firmware link: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Once you download the firmware unzip the file
Go to iTunes plug in your ipod hold down shift and click restore at the same time a window will pop up find where you saved the unzipped firmware click on and click ok your ipod will restore to 3.1.2 then you can jailbreak it

I had this exact problem happen to me today. I have rebooted my phone a hundred times. Last night it ran out of batteries when i was out and this morning I put it on to charge then ran blackra1n to reboot it, the face showed up, then the screen just goes black.

sadly the drawback of jailbreaking with blackra1n is that every time your ipod or iphone is turned off or the battery dies itll go into recovery mode, all you need to do is run blackra1n again – so just keep a decent charge in it

and I have 2 problems…
1. Sometimes I download something from rock or cydia, and iPod needs to respring, but the second time I try to respring, it won't… I have to connect to computer and boot it with blackra1n it again… I don't know why it does this… The second time I respring, it freezes and I have to reboot pressing home and power buttons… (and blackra1n, of course…)
2. I've tried to restore my iPod to it's original 3.1.2 firmware, but when I do, iTunes will tell me that it will restore and upgrade to 3.1.3 firmware… I've also tried to hold shift and press “restore” button to select 3.1.2 firmware I downloaded, but it tells me it's unable to do so and that it is not authorized to do that… Once again, I'd like to know wth is goin on… Thanks in advance…
ok so i used spirt on my 32 gig ipod touch and reset it in the settings part of the ipod and when it went to load back up i froze on the apple sign wit the little loading sign that spins around what do i do can anyone help???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
