A lot of people have been reporting issues with jailbreaking using the new blackra1n tool by George, especially iPod Touch 3G owners. Some of these issues have to do with the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again. For those stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device, here are a few important pointers to keep in mind during the process:
- Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
- Download the purplera1n tool to your desktop. Some users have reported issues of the application crashing or having issues with rights on Vista or 7. This should fix those issues. For more convenience. run it as an administrator.
- Make sure no other software is running when you jailbreak to avoid interference.
- If your device doesn’t boot for a long time, hold down the power and home buttons and restart it. If it tells you to connect to iTunes, something must have gone wrong and you might have to restart the process. I know this is annoying, but it has worked for some people after some tries. It does work.
- You won’t lose your data by jailbreaking. Only a fresh firmware restore could mean that your apps might go away, but they can be synced back using iTunes.
- If you have a white screen turn off the device by holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and boot it again.
- If iTunes keeps popping up, use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go to the task manager and kill all iTunes processes which includes iTunesHelper.exe. This can cause interference with the process too.
- Strangely, doing the process on different computers has also worked for some people.
In the end, keep in mind that blackra1n really works. I tried it on my iPod Touch 2G 8GB, and it worked on the first try. It only got stuck when running Cydia for the first time. I had to reboot using the Power + Home buttons trick, but after that, it has been really smooth.

Update: George Hotz has tweeted about an important issue that most people are facing. You’ll have to check if your iPod Touch 2G or 3G, 8GB model starts with MB or MC. For MC it won’t work, so you should restore it back to the old firmware. It works fine for the ones that start with MB. I guess that should answer most of the issues people are facing with blackra1n.

This means that your jailbreak is tethered. I’m guessing you have an MC model iPod touch. Every time you turn it off, or, let the battery run out, the jailbreak goes away.
Solution; don’t turn off your iPod.

im having trouble with blackra1n where ive jailbroken 2 devices n now i cant get it 2 work like when i get other ipods 2 jail break i cant get the blackra1n program 2 run it keeps sayin that the blackrain has no avn server or sumthin n i go and use other computers 2 jailbreak the ipods (both of them are 2gens 1 is an mc n the other mb)but the blackra1n jail break aint runnin at all n i know what im doin. so what is the problem with the program im not using a mac im using a pc. it pops up with the make it rain butten but then when i hit it it says that theres a problem with the server or what ever n it askes me if i wanna report the problem what am i doin wrong
That means your jailbreak is TETHERED, khan21. Google that if you don’t know what it means.

Okay so I tried jailbreaking with blackra1n and my ipod won’t reboot. When I reboot manually nothing has changed… what do i do? It’s an MB version 3.1.3, I’m guessing that means its 3g? any suggestions on what i can do?

ok i downloaded blackra1n and it said it was done and to wait for the reboot i do that but the blackra1n app is not there. what do i do???
Help. I decided to reset my blackra1n jailbroken itouch 2g by going to the General menu and choosing reset all. The ipod is now stuck with apple logo and the cog which sometimes looks like its working. After about 10 mins I can see the ipod switch off and then come on again without the cog. Then the cog will show and it looks like its starting to do something but then it repeats everything above. Would it help if I let the battery run down? I connect the ipod to my computer all the time this is going on but itunes doesn’t recognise its connected. I did not once when I held down the home and power button keys to shut it down and then restart that my computer made a sound as though a device was connected but nothng else happened – any ideas anyone or am I screwed because of using RESET option?

This is a TETHERED JAILBREAK.
Tethered means that when you turn the JailBroken iPod OFF (or let it run out of battery), you MUST connect it to you PC and Run Blackra1n again.
Its not as bad as you think. Honestly, it uses 7% of battery to boot up, so I never turn it off. Just put it in sleep mode.
When it DOES turn off, and you are tethered, do not worry. When you try to turn it back on, the Recovery Mode screen comes up (Its a USB cord, arrow, and iTunes icon). Just connect to your computer, run blackra1n once, do not go into iTunes, and its all set. You won’t loose any info/apps. Its just because Apple hates people Jailbreaking, so they decided to put a small iBoot chip in the newer models, which forces people to tether it.
JailBreaking does void warranty, and there are risks involved. It my slow down your iPod. But to restore the firmware, just Restore, and its fine.

I downloaded blackra1n and without thinking deleted the blackra1n app before downloading cydia… bad move i know but can anyone tell me how to get the blackra1n app back? i tried running the jailbreak again but it goes threw the motions and says that it is there but the actual application is not there. help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
Restore ur ipod to the 3.1.2 firm ware then re do the black ra1n hack so basicly u have to do every thing over again

i had that problem too and i had done a bunch of stuff to my computer and haddent put music on it in a while but i had it jailbroken and when i went to go and upload music and my movies it didnt recconize it then it would do like a quik sync, where it would say it was syning for like 30 sec's then stop but it would never upload music. i evenutaly just had to restore it to my compter so it recconized it, just try to restore it
Okay, the same thing happened to me today. What you will need to do is hold the power button and the home button for about 1 minute release the power but but keep holding the home button for about 10seconds then it should turn off. plug it back into your computer and then run blackra1n again, it should work. I got worried when it didn't turn off either i was about to through it threw the window….I hope this helped.
thats because you updated to the newest version of itunes which doesnt work with jailbroken devices so you need to uninstall itunes and find an older version online. 9.0.3 is the best!
