A lot of people have been reporting issues with jailbreaking using the new blackra1n tool by George, especially iPod Touch 3G owners. Some of these issues have to do with the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again. For those stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device, here are a few important pointers to keep in mind during the process:
- Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
- Download the purplera1n tool to your desktop. Some users have reported issues of the application crashing or having issues with rights on Vista or 7. This should fix those issues. For more convenience. run it as an administrator.
- Make sure no other software is running when you jailbreak to avoid interference.
- If your device doesn’t boot for a long time, hold down the power and home buttons and restart it. If it tells you to connect to iTunes, something must have gone wrong and you might have to restart the process. I know this is annoying, but it has worked for some people after some tries. It does work.
- You won’t lose your data by jailbreaking. Only a fresh firmware restore could mean that your apps might go away, but they can be synced back using iTunes.
- If you have a white screen turn off the device by holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and boot it again.
- If iTunes keeps popping up, use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go to the task manager and kill all iTunes processes which includes iTunesHelper.exe. This can cause interference with the process too.
- Strangely, doing the process on different computers has also worked for some people.
In the end, keep in mind that blackra1n really works. I tried it on my iPod Touch 2G 8GB, and it worked on the first try. It only got stuck when running Cydia for the first time. I had to reboot using the Power + Home buttons trick, but after that, it has been really smooth.

Update: George Hotz has tweeted about an important issue that most people are facing. You’ll have to check if your iPod Touch 2G or 3G, 8GB model starts with MB or MC. For MC it won’t work, so you should restore it back to the old firmware. It works fine for the ones that start with MB. I guess that should answer most of the issues people are facing with blackra1n.

Can someone please help.
I have Iphone 3GS – its been fine up until now, yesterday the battery ran out so, like usual i connected the iphone to the laptop, ran blackra1n (which usually always worked), so the phone comes up with the geohot screen like its about to reboot and work fine, but the screen goes black, and then back on the apple/connect to iphone screen. Tried this several times and no joy.
Has anyone else experienced this? can anyone help?

You can down grade your ipod to 3.1.2 and then jailbreak it here the firmware link: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Once you download the firmware unzip the file
Go to iTunes plug in your ipod hold down shift and click restore at the same time a window will pop up find where you saved the unzipped firmware click on and click ok your ipod will restore to 3.1.2 then you can jailbreak it

I had this exact problem happen to me today. I have rebooted my phone a hundred times. Last night it ran out of batteries when i was out and this morning I put it on to charge then ran blackra1n to reboot it, the face showed up, then the screen just goes black.
Have you figured out a solution?

Yes same here very stange, had to power off and now after blackra1n which installs as normal my 3GS will not boot just left with blank screen.. have done a few hrs looking on the net but as yet no luck…thought it was something i had done but seems now others are getting the same problem.
Iv had exactly the same problem today and now i dont know what to do because obviously our phones wont turn on with the blackra1n.. Have you been able to over come this issue yet..??..x

sadly the drawback of jailbreaking with blackra1n is that every time your ipod or iphone is turned off or the battery dies itll go into recovery mode, all you need to do is run blackra1n again – so just keep a decent charge in it

I have a jailbroken iPod 3G with firmware 3.1.2
and I have 2 problems…
1. Sometimes I download something from rock or cydia, and iPod needs to respring, but the second time I try to respring, it won't… I have to connect to computer and boot it with blackra1n it again… I don't know why it does this… The second time I respring, it freezes and I have to reboot pressing home and power buttons… (and blackra1n, of course…)
2. I've tried to restore my iPod to it's original 3.1.2 firmware, but when I do, iTunes will tell me that it will restore and upgrade to 3.1.3 firmware… I've also tried to hold shift and press “restore” button to select 3.1.2 firmware I downloaded, but it tells me it's unable to do so and that it is not authorized to do that… Once again, I'd like to know wth is goin on… Thanks in advance…
ok so i used spirt on my 32 gig ipod touch and reset it in the settings part of the ipod and when it went to load back up i froze on the apple sign wit the little loading sign that spins around what do i do can anyone help???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
