Google Maps on iOS has been updated with new features like widgets, and support for Apple Watch and ‘Hey Siri’. The new updates are designed to make it easier for Apple users to get directions, especially on the device of their preference, and will be rolling out to users in the coming weeks and months.
All the new features added to Google Maps on iOS
- New pinned trip widget: The new widget allows users to quickly access the trips they have pinned in the Google Maps’ Go Tab directly from their iPhones’ Home Screen. Transit users will see their arrival time, and the next departure and suggest routes for drivers at a glance.
- Improved Google Maps search widget: The new update had improve the existing widget by making it smaller for users to search for their favorite places and directions to their frequently visited places via a single tap.
- Stand-alone Apple Watch app: In a few weeks, Apple Watch users will be able to start navigation automatically on their smartwatch without the need for their iPhone. And they will be able to add a new “Take me home” complication to quickly start the navigation home.
- Support for “Hey Siri”: Google Maps is directly integrated into Siri, Spotlight, and the Shortcuts app. In the coming months, users will be able to get directions by using voice commands like “Hey Siri, get directions” or “Hey Siri, search in Google Maps”.
As per the announcement, existing users will have to update the app to the latest version and new users will have to download the app’s latest version from the App Store to enjoy the new features, when it is available.
