Google Maps finally brings speedometer and speed limits to iOS and CarPlay

In 2019, Google Maps for Android introduced a speedometer feature to help drivers monitor their speed. This handy feature, which displays your driving speed in real-time, is now rolling out to iPhone and CarPlay users, marking a significant update for iOS users.

Google Maps Speedometer Feature on iPhone Display

Google Maps’ speedometer feature shows your current driving speed in either miles or kilometers per hour, depending on your region. The speedometer appears as a small circle in the bottom-left corner of the screen when navigating. It changes color if you exceed the speed limit, providing a visual cue to slow down.

How to enable the speedometer on iPhone

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Go to Settings > Navigation > Driving options.
  4. Toggle on Show speedometer.

Additionally, Google Maps is rolling out speed limit indicators globally. This feature shows the speed limit for the road you’re driving on and changes the speedometer’s color if you exceed this limit.

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Go to Settings > Navigation > Driving options.
  4. Toggle on Show speed limits.
  5. Global Rollout and Availability.

Google Maps uses a combination of data from local government bodies, AI analysis of Street View images, and third-party information to determine speed limits. This robust system helps ensure that the speed limits displayed are accurate and up-to-date. For instance, the AI model identifies speed limit signs and matches them to their geographic locations, updating the data accordingly.

It’s important to note that the speedometer in Google Maps is for informational use only. Google advises users to always rely on their vehicle’s speedometer for accurate speed readings. External factors may cause slight discrepancies between the app’s reading and the actual speed.

Google confirmed to TechCrunch that the speedometer and speed limits features are rolling out globally for iPhone users. Although these features may take a few weeks to reach all devices, they will soon be available to all iPhone and CarPlay users worldwide
