Google announced that their well-regarded AI photo editing tool, Magic Editor, will be available for all users of Google Photos on iOS starting May 15th, 2024.
What is Magic Editor?
Magic Editor uses artificial intelligence to automatically enhance photos in a variety of ways, including filling in gaps, repositioning subjects, and even changing the background. Previously, this feature was exclusive to Pixel 8 phones and Google One subscribers, but Google is now making it widely available.
Magic Editor offers a level of control and creativity on iOS devices
Google’s Pixel smartphones are known for their exceptional camera quality, largely driven by advanced AI and machine learning technologies. These capabilities manifest in various features:
- Computational Photography: Google leverages AI to enhance images in real time. This includes improving details, reducing noise, and optimizing colors for stunning results.
- Night Sight and Astrophotography: Google’s Night Sight mode uses AI algorithms to capture vibrant and detailed photos in low-light conditions. The Astrophotography mode takes this further, allowing users to capture stunning shots of the night sky.
- Portrait Mode and Bokeh Effects: The AI behind Google’s Portrait Mode accurately detects subjects and applies a pleasing background blur (bokeh) for professional-looking portraits.
- HDR+ Processing: Google’s HDR+ technology uses AI to capture multiple exposures and combine them into a single high-quality image with excellent dynamic range.
How to get started
Getting started with Magic Editor is delightfully simple. After May 15th, all you need to do is update the Google Photos app on your iPhone. Once updated, you’ll find Magic Editor nestled within the familiar editing tools menu. With a few taps and swipes, you can unleash the power of AI to transform your photos.
While concrete details about the Google Pixel 8’s flagship AI photo editing features coming to iPhones are not yet confirmed, the potential for cross-platform integration and collaboration between Google and Apple suggests exciting possibilities for iOS users.
