George Hotz recently released blackra1n RC 2 for iPhone and iPod Touch which fixed various bugs and issues with the jailbreak tool. A good number of previously disappointed users now have succeeded in jailbreaking their devices. For those who still haven’t jailbroken their iPod Touch, here’s a quick guide on how to do that with blackra1n RC 2.
- Download iTunes 8 from Apple’s website.
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It will be free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7 ( if it crashes ).
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After the process is complete, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also install Rock or Icy as well, which are Cydia alternatives.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
Note:
- Only tethered jailbreak is available for iPod Touch 8GB 3G as well as iPhone 3G S, this means that to restart your device after a shutdown, you’ll have to connect it to your Mac or PC and run the jailbreak tool again.
- This will not unlock your iPhone.
- A similar process applies to the Mac version. You will not have to change any compatibility settings, though.

Important: iPhone OS 3.1.3 has been released for the iPhone and iPod Touch. We’ve got a new guide up on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 and iPod Touch 3.1.3 with redsn0w 0.9.4. Don’t upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3 if you’re using an unlocked iPhone 3G/3Gs or a jailbroken iPod Touch 2G (MC Model)/3G. Hi, it's worked fine for my Ipod Touch 2G, 8Gigas, *MC* series, upgraded to the 3.1.2 OS, but I had some issues that I think I'll share:
First I tried with Vista (Spanish language edition):
ITunes (last version) closed, and all ITunes related processes closed in the Task Manager, ie the helper process. I kept the Apple Management Service running.
I tried several times ( blackrain in the Windows XP compatibility mode, sometimes with the run as Admin checked and sometimes with it unchecked), and it kept crashing (just got to the “entering restore mode” blackra1n screen and got stuck there). So I had to keep restoring through ITunes and my anxiety went growing…
In the end, I installed ITunes in my Windows XP (English language edition), ran blackra1n with my Admin account, and in 1 minute I had my IPod jailbroken and happy!!!

i had my latest itunes downgraded from 9 to 8 now.. but the problem… once i connected the data cable to my ipod touch 2g 32gb it always prompted that the usb is malfunctioning…i dont know…i tried red snow…but still my ipod touch wont even turn on… hope you will assist me on this george… im desperate.. thanks in advance….

No ….. Actually blackra1n ONLY jailbreaks 3.1.2 ….. and if this is an iPhone, blacksn0w unlocks 3.1.2 baseband 5.11.07 only ….. so enjoy :D

Most of the thread above only mentions Ipod Touch 8GB 2G, mine is Ipod Touch 16GB 2G. Will it work in the 16GB model? Please bear with me as I’m not really a techie.

I just jail-broke my iPod Touch (32 GB). It worked fine when i put in just standby, When I powered off the iPod and tried to turn it back on, the ipod wouldn’t. There was a picture telling me to connect the iPod to iTunes. Is this is a common problem.
this what they called “tethered” when ever your ipod shut down you will need to do jailbreak again see the notes first one.
You should never let it shut down and atleast for the time being until they figure out a way.

I just wanna know if the itunes has to be 8.0 or 8.2??? because when i try to connect my ipod touch with the itunes in version 8.1.1 it keeps saying that i have to download itunes 8.2 from its website in order for me to use. in other words, it says:
the ipod “… ” cannot be used because it requieres Itunes version 8.2 or later. Go to http://www.itunes.com to download the latest version of itunes.
PS: my ipod touch is 8gb dont know if it’s 2g or 3g and begins with MC model!!!!

I just want to share my experince for such a thing.
Device: iPod Touch 32 G.B.
F/W : 3.1.2 I think it’s 3rd gen (It doesn’t really matter).
O/S : VISTA Ultimate.
I followed the steps as described within windows Vista, but when it come to the “recovery mode”.
usb —>itune pic It’s hangs I don’t know what happening
(Idid run under compt. mode + admin)
but without any luck.
several shutdown and restart also without any luck.
I just changed to Win. Xp sp2 and statrted the blackra1n and it really work and my ipod is jail broken.
So use the xp is much better and consstant.
The Following log is form blackra1n under the vista and where it hang

yo, i’ve looked through all the comments and threads, but there doesnt seem to be an answer to the question: “does blackrain RC 2 work for the itouch 3gen MC models?”
I have an itouch 8g 3rd gen software 3.1.2 and i want to jail break my itouch, but every commenter who says blackrain worked for them either has a 2nd gen or doesnt mention if their itouch is an MB or MC model, help me out here.

i had jailbroken my ipod but it showed a message like connection problem and whenever i restart my ipod it has a display of connect to itunes ans itunes show recovery mode.if i again click blackra1n then it starts as normal and i donot have a blackrain logo

Hey! The newest Blackra1n jailbreak will work on an iPod Touch third gen BUT if you completely shut down and turn on your iPod the jailbreak will be erased. This predicament only occurs on third-gen iPod Touches. The Blackra1n devs are working on an update that will fix this…
AND make sure you have updated to iPhone OS 3.1.2 and have the newest edition of iTunes.

I WILL DONATE FOR SURE!!!! it was like 1 2 3 ….. this is what i did. plugged device and made sure itunes was running and rec my device then i ran the download , few pop ups for ok then after i closed all the pop ups bt pressing ok i seen the imagie on my device, moments later it restart i entered my password and there was the app, started it and working great thanks again!!!!!

Hi IPOD touch 3.1.2 here, downloaded blackra1n and its now on ipod..whenevr i open the application to download Cydia it says under “PLEASE SELECT PACKAGES” : please check your internet connection.

I have an IPod Touch 8g 3rd Gen, with 3.1.2. Just had to restore. I see all my apps in I-Tunes and when I try to sync, some will not sync back onto my touch. Do I have not reinstall these individually or is there another way to get them to all sync back onto my Touch? Thanks

ok so I know how how to go back to 3.1.2!
1. Go to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
2. Go down to the bottom download button not the Top!
3. click the arrow thing pointing up and down and click iPod 3.1.2 with whichever generation yours is
4. it will bring you to a link and click regular download. You might have to wait a bit for the second thing under premium download to load.
5. when its done downloading open itunes and plug your iPod in.
6. hold shift and click restore. Open the 3.1.2 download and it will restore with 3.1.2.
i clicked make it ra1n, but i’m not seeing the guy’s face… it’s saying to wait for reboot but its not working. Anyone know what i’m doing wrong???

I installed blackrain in win7 64 bit with itunes 9 and it worked. I had 3.1.2 firmware installed first and followed the instructions above. My ipod touch is 1st gen. No problems encountered, yet..
I tried to download a theme and it said connect to itunes so i had to do a restore thats gonna take like 5 hrs

I am really confused and new at this whole thing I downloaded it and the application is there and i ran it and downloaded a theme. But how do i make my them work do i have to reboot the ipod or what?
you have to go to cydia and download winter board. then download the theme you want and press home. go to winter board app on the home screen. select the theme that you downloaded and press home then it will take about 30 seconds and slide it to unlock and you will have your theme!

Okay so i downloaded it worked fine besides the tether and downloaded installous and downloaded games utilities et. which was cool and had about 80 apps with an extra of 400 mbs. now i deleted half of those including some music and pictures and videos so i have about 40 or so apps and for some reason it says now that i have about 28.8 mbs of free space. what the hek happened?

hello i have windows vista and i did the whole process once and it worked fine. my iPod shut down and i had to do it again. everytime from now on i can not get it to work. i gets to the screen where it says “done, wait to reboot” and nothing happens. i was hoping for some advice on what to do. you have to shut down your ipod and then put it back on and then it works again and yes i think you can’t get blackra1n with ipod/iphone with the version 3.1.3

hey guys, it took me a about 3 or 4 tries but i did it in the end. ive got a ipod touch 1st gen. i restored it and then exited itunes and press ctrl+alt+del and went to task manager, and stopped the processes for anything itunes related. then i just ran blackra1n normally.
it works but the only thing my ipod shutdown or no batt. why we always have to connect and run the jailbreak tool again but thanks anyway it works ….
what if you get to the point where it says, “enjoy your jailbroken iphone”, but the blackra1n icon is not showing up on the device?
