One of the major upgrades in the latest Pro lineup is the iPhone 14 Pro’s 48MP camera. The huge jump from the iPhone 13 Pro 12MP camera to the iPhone 14 Pro’s 48MP camera is based on new quad-pixel sensor technology which enables users to capture high-resolution images with rich details, zoom and crop them and print them in larger formats.
However, the iPhone 14 Pro camera uses the 48MP camera to take 12MP pictures by default through pixel binning. We have this easy-to-follow guide on how to use the iPhone 14 Pro camera to take 48MP pictures when you want to capture detailed images.
Here is how to set the iPhone 14 Pro camera to 48MP to capture more detailed and sharper images
- Settings app > Camera > Formats.
- In the menu, tap on the “High Efficiency” option which is suitable for file size reduction, Cinematic mode, and HDR video recording.
- Next turn on “Apple ProRAW” feature and tap on the ProRAW Resolution, to set 48MP as the resolution.
Currently only available on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, a ProRAW file will be 75MB-110MB at 48MP. After the 48MP is set as the default resolution for Apple ProRAW, the “RAW” indicator will appear on the top right corner of the camera app. Note that you will also need to use tools like Lightroom or other apps that support RAW image editing, to get the best results with ProRAW images.
The new Pro camera also features new up to 3x on the Ultra Wide camera, up to 2x on the Telephoto camera, up to 2x on the TrueDepth camera and the new Photonic Engine applies Deep Fusion to deliver “extraordinary detail preserve subtle textures, provide better color, and maintain more information in a photo.”
Renowned professional photographer Austin Mann tested the iPhone 14 Pro camera and was impressed by upgrades that he believes are going to “fundamentally change” iPhone photography. The increase in resolution, Cinematic mode in 24fps and 4K, Action mode, and other changes will empower the iPhone photography community to produce versatile creative projects.
