Instagram rolls out new public comments feature for Stories, here’s how it works

Instagram has introduced a new feature that significantly enhances user interaction by allowing public comments on Stories.

Previously, Instagram users could only reply to Stories through private messages visible solely to the content uploader. With this update, users can leave public comments on Stories, which will be visible to all viewers for 24 hours. This new feature is available to users who follow each other, though it remains to be seen whether these comments can be archived once the Story expires.

This shift towards more public interactions in Stories aligns with Instagram’s wider plan to boost engagement on the platform. As Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has pointed out, the platform is focusing more on short-form content, as it fosters better connections among users. The ability to publicly comment on Stories taps into the growing trend of users posting more frequently to Stories than to their main feeds, providing a new avenue for engagement.

In addition to this comment feature, Instagram has introduced new fonts and text animations, further enhancing the customization options available to users. Moreover, the platform has launched the Instagram Creator Lab in India, supporting both English and Hindi, signaling its commitment to expanding its reach in diverse markets.

The process for adding comments to an Instagram Story is straightforward. When viewing a Story, users will now see a comment button at the bottom of the screen. Tapping on this button opens a comment box where they can type and post their comments. The person who posted the Story will receive a notification about the comment, and if they respond, the original commenter will also be notified.

This feature is part of Instagram’s ongoing efforts to make Stories a more interactive and engaging aspect of the platform. Earlier this summer, Instagram introduced disappearing “Notes” for grid posts and Reels, allowing users to leave comments that expire after three days. These temporary notes are designed to make interactions from friends more visible and prominent. Additionally, some post likes will now appear as floating hearts, similar to those in disappearing notes, further emphasizing user engagement.
