Instagram is notifying users that the swipe-up gesture to access links will be replaced by new link stickers. From August 30, 2021, a simple sticker with the link will appear in stories for viewers to tap on and access the linked account or website.
The social media platform began testing link stickers in June this year with a small test sample. At the time, Instagram head of Product Vishal Shah said that feature was to gain insight into what types of links users share. He also added that stickers are a new and simple way for sharing information and that the company would roll out the feature globally if it works.
“Plus, stickers, fit more into the current way people use the platform, so he says this test brings links into the same kind of overall system, which from a simplicity of system perspective, also makes a lot of sense.
He adds that link stickers are the eventual goal for Instagram, whether that be for everyone or just people who already have linking privileges. “That is the sort of future system we would like to get to. And that’s what we hope to roll out, if we’re able to make this work.”
Instagram also allows accounts with a voice to share link stickers
As Shah had explained earlier link stories will only appear in the Stories section and in addition to verified and accounts with 10,000 and more followers, accounts with “a voice and presence” will also be able to add link stickers to direct their viewers to websites, accounts or spread awareness.
Although the company is getting ready to roll out the new feature, the link stickers are not appearing on the Stories sticker sheet. Reverse engineering expert Jang Manchun Wong shared her concern about losing the option to add links.
