Finally, Apple has updated iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 adoption report which reveals that 81% of iPhones and 75% of iPads introduced in the last four years are on the latest software version. The report is the first peek into the official adoption numbers.
The iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 were announced at the WWDC 2020 event and after development through months of beta testing, the latest iPhone and iPad software versions were released to the public on September 17, 2020. Apple has introduced many new features and performance improvements in the new software updates like Home Screen widgets, App Clips, App Library, privacy updates, and more.
iOS 14 installed on 81% of iPhone introduced in the last 4 years
According to data provided by Apple, 81% of iPhone models released since 2016 are running on iOS 14 which includes:
- iPhone SE (1st generation)
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
- iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
- iPhone X, XS, XS Max, and XR
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd generation)
- iPhone 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max
17% of the aforementioned smartphones are still on iOS 13 and only 2% on earlier iOS versions. In addition, the company states that overall 72% of iPhones have installed iOS 14, while 18% are on iOS 13 and 10% on the earlier iOS version. The 10% includes iPhone models that are not compatible with iOS 14.
75% of iPad models released in the last four years have installed iPadOS 14 that includes:
- 9.7-inch iPad Pro (1st generation)
- iPad (5th generation)
- 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2nd generation)
- iPad (6th generation)
- 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation)
- iPad Mini (5th generation)
- iPad (7th generation)
- 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (4th generation)
- iPad (8th generation)
- iPad Air (4th generation)
Out of the aforementioned devices, 22% are on iPadOS 13 and 3% on earlier iPadOS versions. Furthermore, 61% of all devices use iPadOS 14, 21% use iPadOS 13 and 18% use earlier iPadOS versions. It must be kept in mind that 18% iPads also include the models which are not compatible with iPadOS 14.
iOS 14 adoption chart by Mixpanel reveals that between November 17 – December 17, 2020, the software installation rate was from 70% to 80%. And a three months assessment since the time of launch on September 17 shows that the installation rate by the end of September was 37.4%, by the end of October 51.8%, by the end of November 76.79%.
