Apple has finally released the iOS 17.5 update to the general public after a month of beta testing. This latest update brings a host of new features and improvements to iPhones, from challenging your vocabulary with a new word game to keeping your news accessible offline.
Quartiles
One of the exciting additions in iOS 17.5 is the introduction of a new puzzle game called Quartiles for Apple News Plus subscribers. In Quartiles, players are presented with a grid of 20 tiles, each containing parts of words like “te” and “tra.” The objective is to combine these tiles to form different words, with the maximum word length being four tiles. Quartiles adds a fun twist to your daily routine, offering a refreshing challenge for word game enthusiasts.
Puzzle leaderboards for Apple News+
iOS 17.5 also brings puzzle leaderboards to Apple News Plus, allowing subscribers to compare their daily puzzle scores with others. To enable this feature, simply go to Settings > News and toggle on the Game Center option under News+ Puzzles. Compete with friends and family members and see how you rank among other solvers on today’s puzzles.
Apple News+ offline mode
For Apple News Plus subscribers, iOS 17.5 introduces an Offline Mode, allowing users to access the Today feed and News+ tab even without an internet connection. To enable Offline Mode, go to Settings > News and toggle on the Automatic Downloads option. You can manage your downloads by tapping on Download Options and selecting your preferences.
App Distribution via the web for EU Users
In compliance with the Digital Markets Act, iOS 17.5 now allows users in the European Union to download apps directly from a developer’s website. This update gives developers the ability to distribute approved, non-marketplace apps from their websites, providing more flexibility and options for app distribution.
Enhanced Privacy Features
iOS 17.5 introduces enhanced privacy features, including cross-platform tracking detection. Users will receive notifications if a compatible Bluetooth tracker they do not own is moving with them, regardless of the operating system the device is paired with. This feature adds an extra layer of security and privacy to your iPhone experience.
Pride collection wallpapers
To celebrate Pride 2024, Apple has added a new set of Pride Collection wallpapers to iOS 17.5. These wallpapers feature the word “Pride” in five different color schemes inspired by LGBTQ+ communities, adding a vibrant and colorful touch to your iPhone’s display.
Podcast widget enhancements
With iOS 17.5, the Podcast widget now changes color to match the artwork of the podcast you’re listening to. This aesthetic feature adds a personalized touch to your home screen, enhancing your listening experience.
Reading goals for books
iOS 17.5 brings a new reading goals feature to the Books app, allowing users to set daily reading goals and track their progress. Whether you’re a casual reader or a bookworm, this feature helps you stay on track and achieve your reading goals.
Repair State mode
A new Repair State mode allows users to prepare their iPhone for repairs by enabling a special mode in Find My. This mode simplifies the repair process and ensures a smooth experience when getting your device serviced at an Apple store.
