Apple has announced iPadOS 17 which features a number of improvements to PDF handling and the Notes app. In the upcoming iPadOS 17 update, machine learning will identify fields in PDFs and the Notes app will gain the ability to organize PDFs and more.
In addition to improvements to PDF and the Notes app, iOS 17 update also features a redesigned Lock Screen, interactive widgets, a native Health app, as well as updates to Messages, FaceTime, and Safari.
iPadOS 17 will allow users to edit PDFs, and even create and share custom templates in the Notes app
iPad users work with PDF files more than often, whether they’re studying for a chemistry exam or filling out paperwork at the doctor’s office. As announced at WWDC23, the iPad OS 17 will offer features that are designed to improve the experience of working with PDFs on iPad.
Improved PDF handling
iPadOS 17 uses machine learning technology to identify fields in PDFs, making it easier to add details, such as names, addresses, and emails from Contacts, and even import that info from users’ contacts. Users will also be able to fill out forms and sign documents using the Apple Pencil.
New Notes app
A big update to the Notes app in iOS 17 is new ways to organize, read, annotate, and collaborate on PDFs. In iPadOS 17, PDFs will appear in full width, making it easy to flip through pages, add annotations, or sketch directly in the document using an Apple Pencil.
Users will be able to review and mark up PDFs and scanned documents right in the Notes app, and with live collaboration, updates will appear in real-time when users are sharing a note with others.
The new Notes app will even allow users to create and share custom templates for their notes. This will make it easier to get started with a new note or to keep notes organized.
Availability
iPadOS 17 will be made available in the fall alongside the announcement of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro and other products. The first developer beta of iPadOS 17 has been released for developers and a public beta will become available in July.
